Title: Misfire and error codes
Post by: viper357 on 09 February 2013, 16:09:35
Hi guys

I have the following error codes from my car:

0420 cat
0300 random misfire
0306 cylinder 6 misfire
0430 cat

Do you think the misfires would cause the 0420 and 0430 errors?

Also, what are the best spark plugs to use in the 3.2, the four-electrode Bosch ones?

Thanks.

sometimes supermarket fuel can bring those codes up too :-\
as for the misfire on number 6 cylinder its probably just the plug as i have heard they are a pita to remove (as i have read on a few threads) so may well have never been replaced.

Engine management light keeps coming on.  3.2 MV6 with 216K on the clock.  I'll have to check next time but there were 4 fault codes.  Can't remember exactly what they were but 0420 and 0430 might have been 2 of them.

I know that I didn't fit GM spark plugs last service, because erm stupid.  But Car seems to be running fine. Happens when I accelerate hard.  Light Goes off eventually, if I'm tottling down the motorway at 65 mph (as you do when you can't be arsed to drive faster)

Anyway I have to

400 codes aren't misfires, and are really unlikely to be ignition related. As it's a 3.2, you're probably looking at the cat/pre-cat fault that is fixed by moving the top O2 sensors.

Any good quality spark plug(Bosch, GM, NGK) will be fine, GM ones are recommended if you can get them at a good price. I find they're no cheaper than NGK from a local factor, but are more hassle to get so don't bother

Light gone out this morning.  Still I have 1000 miles to do in the next 7 days, so i am sure it will be on again.

Fill with, a premium fuel, Tesco 99/shell optimal, BP ultimate, new air filter, I did use NGK twin electrodes, for 3.0L, then take it for a good long blast along the motorway, good 40+ miles. or get lamdas moved, there is a guide, or if you can get a pair of 3.0L/2.5 downpipes

Stop using crap fuel and drive it properly. If you're getting more than 25 mpg out of it, then you simply aren't driving it properly  ;D

Over the last 15 years  of V6 Omega ownership, 95% of the time, I use Morrisons 95 (they don't do 98/99) as its convenient.
Whenever I have had any lights come on or misfires, which is relatively infrequently, it usually has been water in the plug wells, despite following the guide regarding sealing the scuttle....
Although a Tesco with 99 Momentum has opened near us, and having tried it on my older classics, I am impressed with how the old cars run with it, so may give it a whirl.
