General Car Chat / Re: So what have you done to your car today?

That's a cracking 'build' there, keep going!

I'm very much at the other end of the spectrum no matter what I do and the love I lavish on her she just looks a total shed and is thanking me by having another problem arise that needs to be cured asap. So, as per the thread...

Relocated DISpack to NS wing between engine and PAS reservoir, because the sealing job I did on the scuttle was only half effective, the silicone didn't go off fully before the rain set in a couple of days later, hence misfire. Fitted a spare used 'good' Bosch DISpack which ran a bit lumpy on, but the point is I then didn't have a 2 hour faff in the rain to replace it, it was the work of moments to swap it out for my brand spanking new Bosch one still in box. I'll retrieve the original DISpack from the scuttle at some point, but for now she runs well, and it doesn't matter how much the scuttle leaks, it won't hurt anything.  :y

On the plus side - I now know that used 'good' DIS pack can go in the bin.
-I don't have to seal the scuttle best I can, hope, then wait for heavy rain to see if she starts missing - meaning a stuffed DIS pack again. I can do that when the weather is dry.
-I might actually have a day this month I'm not working on my car!  :y

Not a bag idea. I have to say mine is a halfords one and though I've never had issue with any of their tools (hex bit holder aside which doesn't have a magnet, thereby meaning you lose every hex bit you put in it, I digress!) I think the flare spanner is a little oversized. Seem to recall trying it on eg: a 9mm bolt, vs. a 9mm ring spanner i think theres a little more play, whcih really doesn't help on unions. Maybe one day I'll give it an 'adjustment' in a vice or with a hammer.

Was down near our local store not long ago and there was a young lass pulling/pushing/twisting the front wiper blade on a Jag XF trying to work out how to remove it from the car while a young lad[the second half of the "fitting" team]was laying wiper blades out on the floor[out of their packaging] to be ready to compare with the removed one-if she ever managed to remove it!!

Ah, yes, let's get some lovely grit from the tarmac stuck to these blades to scrape all over the glass windscreen!

Right, I take back my previous post, they're just morons!  ;D

Actually, last time I went in there for anything other than a browse I grabbed a guy and asked him about removing my head unit, and all credit to him, he was sound, knew what he was talking about and sat with me for a good ten minutes with the correct metal tools and plastic pry levers fiddling without damaging a thing, no charge, I wasn't even after buying anything, he was just being helpful for the sake of being helpful.

Similar to where I work, I'd like to think I'm one of the 'better informed' idiots there... but 80% of it is what I know from outside of work, by just living and listening, not any training I've received from work. There's an intensive trainig program, that's the irony, takes about 10-odd hours to complete... none of it relevant to the job! I've never needed to know any of it! But we then get the newbies who after a month can't place orders, or look stuff up on the system, or check for incoming stock etc... and this is basics they should be taught first week. So lack of training is the main gripe, and if they're off to uni in 5 minutes, why bother?

I hope friends or family gets to read this. Thing is many of us are 'strangers' - we'd never recognise each other in the street if we passed each other, but we do know each other by username etc. for years, some of us. Whatever he was in the 'real world' he was obviously liked here  :)

Omega General Help / Problem after problem after...

Without boring the bits off you all, suffice it to say my car's been in bits more than assembled over the last few weeks, and Miss DBG needs it for work 'tomorrow' each time, so pressure's always on to make sure she's running.

Fuel pump, sparks, oil n filters, done recently. Brand new DIS pack (last night) HTs with 4 years on them, always runs on Tesco Ultimatum and currently has a bottle of redex in the tank.

Slow to start today, and has started to get a bit slower recently. Fast turnover, good starter/alternator, but exactly the same as the other week when the fuel lines were purged. So I'm diagnosing FPR non-return valve is getting tired. Everyone concur? Just before I source another car part wanted everyone's opinions.  :y

ozzycat rings a bell, cant claim to have known him, but I gladly doff my cap in his direction out of respect.

My proper flare spanner slipped and rounded my last union I tried to undo. That line got replaced the next day. So as above, sadly they may well be past it by now... but I'd still recommend getting a flare spanner 'in' as they are the right tool for the right job and all that.

pretty sure, i bought some not long ago however... just a note, these mean you often lose the central rod in trying to remove, there are other types which have a captive central 'rod' not unlike a noticeboard drawing pin. I've changed to this type which needs either a screwdriver or just a fingernail to remove, unlike the drift and small hammer like the originals do  :y

Just been on the website out of curiosity and the 3 wheeler does 0-60 in 6 seconds...on 82bhp!

Just shows how much weight is the enemy of all things, speed, handling, mpg.

What was funny was a time when looking for work I applied for a job there, and didnt even get an interview. This is someone who's been tinkering with cars since as long as I can remember, theres a photo of me somewhere with a wheelbrace working on a HC Viva's rostyle at about aged 4!

Now I never claim to be any sort of mechanic, I'm just a tinkerer willing to learn, but thats sort of symptomatic of the level of person they want to employ, I'd imagine if an ex mechanic of 20 yrs experience applied they'd turn the down. They actually want the Currys/generic Phone Shop/fast food brigade, we all know the types, blank stare, as little personality as possible, to scan stuff through the till and anything else more challenging just 'go and ask someone'

And I really wanted that Halfords staff discount, too!!!  >:( ;D

I know. I'm thinking of flogging it and retiring off the profits. But I need time it right, before there's more bumpers left than actual cars/owners  :D

well this one certainly sounds ceramic! sounds like a teacup rattling around inside a biscuit tin!

My old (GM) ones are still in the back garden, I'll be donating them to a friend who works on a lot of cars, he can always make use of the tubing for car repairs.

Unless the persons of the traveling persuasion discover them first...

What's wrong with the GM ones, very rare that they fail, good 3.0L/2.5L cats are worth good money to put on 3.2L.

They've got 208,000 miles on them and rattled to the point people actually threw copper pennies AT my car, dinging off the door, saying "here, buy yourself a better car"  >:( :'( and laughed.
