Any recommendations? Taking the Zafira to Ireland for a week soon, already have AA cover here through my bank account.
But the AA want an extra £52 just for 1 weeks breakdown cover :o

Presumably the Republic rather than the North ? There is actually no such country as Ireland. Its an island with two countries on it :D
Anyhoo, if the Republic probably EU breakdown cover required ? In the North, UK cover should be ok.

Not sure of short term cover , we have it included in each vehicle insurance cover.
I can only suggest you Google the question.

Yeah i've googled a few, but know a few people here have discussed it and gone with some recommendations from here.

I don't consider £52 for 1 week's breakdown reasonable at-all, I pay less for entire year for UK and I've paid similar for one years ADAC Europe cover.
Gave up searching and just sorted full European breakdown on my car insurance for small sum of £16 for two months cover. Job done, tempted on a little jaunt into Belgium in August now if we can fit it in.

Is the place you are going to close to the border with NI? If so I am sure a friendly Irishman could tow you over it into the NI, before you call the AA ;)

Admiral. I have multi-car with them, the policy expires in September, so they just added on full cover until then. Might work out more, depends when your policy end date is as they don't do fixed cover periods.

It's fine, the Bishop of Galway is my wifes Uncle, so we will be protected ;D :)

When your renewal is up, see if REIS will quote you for Family Fleet cover.. I have legal cover, protected NCB, full European breakdown cover and driving any car (not owned by me, up to the value of £150,000) covered fully comprehensive (not third-party) for a reasonable sum (about £100 more than Admiral quoted for basic multi-car with no protected NCB, no breakdown, no legal assist etc)..

Thanks, I'll check this out. Although I rarely drive any other car now other than 2 we have.

Read the small print very carefully, some do *NOT* include things like repatriation of the vehicle if it breaks down and cant be fixed quickly, just the tow to the local garage - basically an extension of the basic cover you would get in the UK.

To emphasise ... read it all twice ... especially as many policies have an upper limit of the "current vehicle value" ... which means they will NOT repatriate an Omega as it market value is below the cost of repatriation ........ :(
This was one of the reasons behind the recent change of vehicle .... :(

Taking the Zafira, not the Omega. So value/age not a problem. Confirmed they will bring it back to UK if it can’t be fixed.
But given there will be Opel dealers, if anything does to, I’ll just get it fixed there.

Steep? Depends which way you look at it.
Realistically it’s the cost of a “cafe culture” lunch for two with drinks.
Or, the cost of the curry, the night before getting the ferry.
For a brief trip, In 2019, I don’t think it’s *that* much money, to have the security of being recovered from the side of a foreign motorway, hundreds of miles from home.
Buying a Costa coffee each day can top £100 a month as another comparison :y

my breakdown cover is due, as is the travel insurance,
last year was 42 quid for breakdown and 41 quid for travel,
this year autoaid want 59 quid, not priced travel but it wont have gone down,
I opened a nationwide flex account that gives uk and european breakdown as well as travel and phone insurance,
13 quid a month, 156 quid a year which is what I was paying to add 2 weeks european breakdown,
no age limits on car.

TBH, on that trip, I hadn't actually read the insurance, or paid attention to it. It was included free with the holiday. Not sure if I would have got breakdown cover previously.
Now we get it religiously, and read the restrictions carefully. Mrs TB would stress about it all holiday otherwise, and that would be ruining her well deserved breaks.

years ago coming back from a three week Europe trip to Spain and Portugal , we broke down in our Carlton- probably crank sensor? It was a saturday night at Chatelreaux in France. 2 minutes to Opel garage closing time 100 yards up the road. Our breakdown cover was brilliant. They put us up in a hotel for two nights and even lent us some money.
