No t5 experience, but I ran a couple of 9-5aeros and when the direct ignition pack (all 4 coil packs linked together) started to go it gave those symptoms.

Is the eml light on? If it's missing there should be a code.  :y

The other common issue with these is the position sensor in the drive-by-wire throttle bodies which made it hesitant at certain throttle positions, I believe. Depends on the nature of the "lumpy".

Worth getting one coil pack and swap around until you find the bad one, rare that they would all go.

Once one goes, the rest will follow.

As Kevin Wood states the fly-by-wire cars can have issues with the ETM although how these issues manifest themselves I don't know as my V70 hasn't exhibited any as yet.It may need a proper Volvo Vida/Dice to read the codes fully.Volvo independants and a lot of Volvo owners have these so it's not necessarily a main stealer job to have done.

That's not what happens.

What I meant was...if one goes, the others are of a similar age and I wouldn't feel happy changing just one.

Again, not volvo specific information, but the eBay DI packs on Saabs lasted about 1000-5000 miles on average. Soo, if the problem is solved but re-occurs in a few months time, tell him to bite the bullet and buy the genuine items.  :y
