My new bike insurer needs this information
« on: 20 July 2017, 00:41:33 »

Because of the following reasons :-

This is just a follow up email to remind you that you need to meet some requirements in order to process your policy fully.

These requirements are imposed by insurers and the government as compliance, anti-fraud and anti-terrorism measures.
Below is the up to date status of your account:

Subjectivity
                Status
Copy of Licence               Outstanding
Proof of NCB                  Outstanding
Licence Check Code        Outstanding

WTF has any of this got to do with anti-terrorism  ???

Anyone else been asked for a  copy of their licence,

No I've never been asked for my licence either, although I understand insurers have had the option to ask to see one for quite some time.

Hmm,

Don't think so for me, some have asked for proof of NCD but licence and one-time-code have only ever been asked for by hire car companies.

Odd though, doesn't the one time code render asking for the licence obsolete? Given the code links to your licence number and NI number?  :-\

Some reason standard for motorbikes, I've never had to supply these for car insurance.

But each motorcycle insurance review I had to send these in, apart from licence check code.

Anyone else been asked for a  copy of their licence,

Yes, and I refused. There is no such law requiring you to supply a copy of the license. They then say that their company policy is to hold the info on file for compliance purposes. I reply that my policy is to charge everyone £1000 to supply personal information not required by statute. Things tend to go quiet after that. If I did ever get any further demands my reply would be that I haven't received my cheque for £1000 yet.

There is a database that insurers can consult to check that you're being honest about licence details and convictions. For that they do need your license number. Brokers have to pay to access this, so they usually try and strong arm you into supplying a copy of your license instead.

While I admire that approach, have you ever had to fight in court to get an insurance payout? I can only imagine them using your failure to provide the details they request as a "reason to treat your insurance as null & void"..

I think I was asked once, way back when (when paper licenses were still a thing) I was insuring a Japanese import grp 20 car at 21 ;D

I'm not sure that your scenario would hold water in court, aaron, because they accepted the premium and the attendant risk. If they had any objection they should have refused the premium.
They can't have it both ways!
