its a vectra, just cleaned the MAF/air temp unit as it just read 37c all the time, and had pull back on steady speeds. so cleaned it out and its working fine. now have this random ping sound at idle, its like 3 or for pings then stops then 1 ping never the same but if you rev up its gone, Im going to take the spark plugs out as it sounds like its coming from number 4 piston, it sounds a bit like pre-ignition but timing still correct, could it be the injector or something mechanical ?

I cannot find anything wrong, timing correct. spark plug colours etc all look fine but only does it at idle. rev up its gone back to idle starts again ? could it be a sticking injector ? its not loud sound its like some one tapping on a piece of glass with a fork. very similar. there is no oil leaks oil just below max mark, had a look round to see if anything is loose, but cannot see anything, even though it could be in the clutch housing as its hard to pin down the sound but even with the clutch pedal down still make the sound ?   could it be the piston or rings? engine runs fine now MAF cleaned  and its not registering on the knock sensor. any one any ideas ?

I have heard pinking from loose plugs but only just, was on my 5cyl v70 its is a strange sound.

I had a dreaded xe1 in a v reg zafira, it was garbage

Its not the fuel tank vent valve is it?

thanks fuse 19 i will have a check, will have to be tomorrow if its not raining, as out in bit, ive been trying to find out if there is any vids on youtube with the sound, might have a go with a tube and see if can hear it better from were its coming from,  frostbite thank you i had plugs out and all was good, all the same colour. could not see any damage etc to the dispack as its all one unit. but i do have a spare one for that type engine. might give that ago if i cannot find out what it is.

Ours made a tapping sound when revved, sort of like a cracked manifold

I remember looking down into the inlet manifold, it was caked in oil an sludge, the dual tract flaps wernt working properly

Im sure the bottom end was on its way out

Ive checked the vent fuel vent valve sounds normal, I listened to the injectors but number 4 sounds different, 1 to 3 sound like a squrt number 4 sounds like a spit if you know what i mean, should i try some injector cleaner or take it out and check the filter etc ? if i take it out then i will have buy new set of seals for all 4 injectors.  think there is a vacume leak as well as can hear what sounds like air but could not determine were it was coming from, it was like from the inlet but sprayed carb cleaner and no change in engine on the area.

If you pull up the fuel rail straight up, you wont damage the seals.
I pulled apart my v855 and had to replace the injector seats because the P/O never put them back.

i pulled the injection rail off and say said did all come off fine thanks for that. and think i found the problem the rubber seal was split. but wile they all off going to make sure they all clean before refitting. bought a new seal but comes with 4 rubber seals so change them all.  cleaning the jets out with a 5v pulse power, seems to work fine have them in soak, don't want to put full voltage through them  while in soak, think i might get a sonic cleaner if have to do it next time. see how it goes have to soak for 12 hours in this cleaning solution.

Personally I'd just post them to www.injectorcleaning.co.uk - done in under a week for £60 (they're in Hull, IIRC)

I did a few more checks and the manifold was lose ?don't know how, but tightened it up. put injectors back in and its all sounds good now, took it for a 20 min drive sounds and feels better. let it to tick over on idle no strange sounds now   all done i think. see how it goes.
