Passenger windscreen wiper stopped working
« on: 08 August 2017, 18:59:26 »

Drivers is fine. When lifting the passenger wiper of the windscreen, the metal part feels lose and moves too freely compared to the drivers wiper? Only happened today.

Sounds like either the splines on the spindle that the wiper arm fits on have worn, but I'd think this rare/unlikely/unheard of.Or the linkage has parted in some way.I'd remove the scuttle panel and have a look at the linkages.

Once the linkage starts coming adrift, its usually wear on the knuckle joints. Rather than repair, I'd replace with a good used unit (wiper motor with linkage) as they are cheap enough to buy, and easy to fit once the scuttle is removed. Just check that there isnt excessive play on the replacement by checking free movement on the arms and up and down movement on each knuckle joint.

After reading the shuttle guide, I will first check the nut is not lose. Hopefully it just needs tightening up?

That would be my guess.

Had a look under the bonnet with the wipers on. The metal rod from the wiper motor which should be attached to the underside passenger wiper, underneath the rear of he engine bay, has come completely lose and is moving freely. It there anyway of reattaching it?

The nylon balljoints wear and fall apart. You might be able to reattach it, but don't expect it to last long. You can buy clips to prolong the life a bit LINK but you really ought to budget for a replacement linkage.

Thanks for the link Nick. To fit that, do I need to remove the scuttle?

I've had some sucess with these in the past as a temporary repair. They stop the linkage knuckle joints coming apart.

Er, keep up at the back ::)

And yes, removing the scuttle is always a good idea when rummaging about in that area

The clip arrived today, but cannot get to the nut. My mechanic has very small hands, going to see if he can fit it. I don’t want to have to take the wipers and scuttle off, looks beyond my abilities😀
