The one thing I would be doing is adding oil jets to the big ends of the conrods, easy to do and improves the piston cooling (a common addition to force induction cars).

The mod to the cooling system was to open out the feed from the oil cooler are to the rear cylinders, I recall seeing a document where this was included in the base design around 1997 which coincides with the times Saab were playing and when the head gasket issues came about.

thanks for the reply's gents all good information. A softly softly approach is definitely the way forward here with lots of information gathering.
