Screenwash
« on: 11 February 2018, 10:20:01 »

What are peeps using. Now the Halfords -20C stuff is at a silly £5.63 (trade), I need to start looking at other options, esp given the way Mrs TB gets through the stuff in TBE.

TripleQX is out, as the remaining 25l of unopened stuff got chucked.

Any other brands people use work well, both on cleaning performance and resistance to freezing?  Round these parts, there are no independent type factors, its all Halfords, Euroshite and GSF etc.

Just reminded me 3.2 was asking for screen wash on Friday, luckily I'm not due to drive again until Thursday. Normally I won't bother filling it today, but it's dry. It's supposed to be wet all next week.

And yes I use ECP QX stuff, in both Zaf and 3.2, zero complaints here, cleans it up nicely.

This is bizarre, as I bought a load of concentrate when it was £2 a few months back, and put it in neat in the Jag and the Elite. It had the cleaning capability of water, and just froze all the time, when outside was about -4c.

I tried about 3 or 4 bottles of the stuff with similar results, and recently tipped the other 5 cans down the drain as it was that useless.  Plus I had a washer seal fail on the Jag, but can't say it was that screenwash or not....   ....but not risking it again.

If it comes down in the summer, I might buy 20 of them, for next winter. Its storing the damn things ;D

TPS, Trade Parts Specialist. They are in most areas as they are the trade section for VAG main dealers and are owned directly by VAG. Retail customers can use them as well and they will normally get trade discounts on consumables.

I have my own account with them as I am involved in the motor trade.

Bad batch?

Foams up tiny bit and brings up huge Zaf screen crystal clear, same with 3.2.

Perhaps it needs mixing with water to help? Mine goes in 50/50 mix currently.

I'll have to find out what the stuff I been using is called, good stuff hasn't frozen yet and crystal clear clean, friend of mine, erm, borrows it from work, apparently its the same stuff they use on them things that go up and down the Country at over 100mph and run on tracks.  :-X

Maybe that's it, as I put it in neat.  But even neat, it still froze.

I might still have a (empty) can in garage, if so, I'll photo it, see if same as your stuff :)

My old Carlton had a huge screenwash reservoir and it was quite frugal in its use, too, so fill-ups were rare, unlike my Omega!

Whatever is on the shelves of a supermarket or other shop is what usually goes in there. i don't think I've ever bought the so called quality stuff and the screen is clean enough after i've given the wipers a quick blast..

Screen wash is not something that keeps me awake at night.   :P

It surprised me how much Vauxhall's screen wash was when I bought some a few weeks ago. Fortunately Paula at Wigan gave me standard trade discount which reduced it to about £16 per 5 litres

The -10C is around £3.50 on trade.  The -20C is around £5.50, and I figure you can dilute further.

The premix -20C is a lot cheaper, but not sure if that can be further diluted?

Screen wash is not something that keeps me awake at night.   :P
And it shouldn't be, before this ECP/TripleQX wank fiasco, my concerns with certain types previously was removing flies that had had their arses rammed through their heads at 130mph.

But I do utterly insist on screenwash that doesn't freeze at the first sign of being slightly chilly, and if it has cleaning ability, that is also to be welcomed.

It can be 50p for 1000l, if its only going to get tipped down the drain, that still represents poor value ;)

Screen wash is not something that keeps me awake at night.   :P
And it shouldn't be,  .....

but as we know, the really cheap sh1te encourages growth of sludge in the washer bottle which will block the filter/strainer.

Yes, it was, and even after cleaning filter and reservoir and using undiluted TripleQX (I'm part Yorkshire, part Cornish, so don't throw anything away!) it still clogs up.
However, last time I was at Serek's, he showed me a quick and easy way to clear the filter, if it will help anyone else - he opened the connector in the tube feeding the washers (located near the wing side of the battery, before it splits into two tube to feed near and offside washers), and blew hard down the tube feeding back to the reservoir.
It blew the cap off the reservoir!
Strong in every respect, is Serek!  :y

If you have that white stuff formed in the bottle, the only viable solution is to remove both pumps (10s), and flush the bottle out thoroughly (10mins).

I have used Opticlean for years, seemed cheap enough Trade Club. As said earlier, I was charged £20 for 1 5 litre bottle of Opticlean at Bellingers |Grove, who used to be my handy Trade Club supplier in my Senator days. Are you sure it is £10 for 4X5 litres?

A chap at work uses water in the summer, and a 50/50 mix or car shampoo and water :-X

He also wonders why the filter keeps clogging  ::)

I buy mine from Vauxhall, their tradeclub stuff, not optiplex.

This time of year it goes in neat so i can keep the screen clear even wehn very cold outside.  Should be down to -20 iirc

Always seems to be £10 a box of 4x5 litre
I shall ring the dealer this week, see what he has :y.  I wasn't aware there was a TC one.

I've tried both and Opticlean is so much better - cheap on TC
I have used Opticlean for years, seemed cheap enough Trade Club. As said earlier, I was charged £20 for 1 5 litre bottle of Opticlean at Bellingers |Grove, who used to be my handy Trade Club supplier in my Senator days. Are you sure it is £10 for 4X5 litres?

Mine do 2, Opticlean, or tradeclub screenwash, didnt go into the garage today to grab a bottle, will try tomorrow

I use the Aldi stuff.  No complaints.

Ditto.. still working on the four bottles I bought years ago ;D Then again, I did let the Skoda dealer fill the washer bottle (for "free") at the last service </laziness>

Fikkin'eck, both the Shag and TBE empty the screenwash in under 2 weeks this time of year.  That's over a can per car, per fortnight :o

In TBE, it just Mrs TB. Yes, I swear she sellotapes the lever into the wash position.

In the Shag, it pops the lights on at the first sign on not having bright sunlight, and the headlamp washers chuck it out at an alarming rate.

The Skoda seems much more frugal in that regard compared to the BMW, especially the E46 I had which pumped out a veritable fountain. As my friends discovered when they were checking the lights after we'd put the bumper back on and I pulled the wrong stalk ;D ;D :-X

Mine needed about 2 litres a year until I fixed the headlight washers. I've just filled it up with 4 litres.

I still don't consider anything that's diluted 1:1 as being concentrated.
Try this stuff, which is 1:100 :y

Surely that's likely to be no better (mixed at their quantities of 1 bottle to 2.5-4l of water) that the TripleQX shite that I used to clean the drains?

I've used it, and it works fine. But so does every other brand I've used.

So I topped up the Zaf today, as it was complaining it was low. Mixed up a strongish batch in 5L tub, only about half went in. Suggests it has 3L capacity.  :o

Is that average now or is the Omega one just gigantic at 6.3L?

I'm forever topping up ours in this weather, neither seem to hold much at all.

Sounds about right for a car without headlight washers.
