General Car Chat / TC fully skimmed oil
« on: 09 August 2013, 14:18:29 »
How much does a 5 litre bottle of GM oil cost when bought on a 4 for 3 offer? I can't make head nor tail of my receipt  :-\

Pt Number      Description     Bin       Retail      Qty      List       Value
93165409       oil, engine      bulk     £50         3         £20.46   £49.98
93165409       free oil          bulk      £0.00      1         0.00      0.00

No matter which way I add/divide/multiply I can't get 3 lots of £20.46 to come to £49.98  ???  ???  (all +vat of course)

Not complaining, it works out to almost £15 a metric gallon, but just no idea how they arrive at the price on the receipt  :-\

I found this - I didn't know that you could watch films on BBCi player  ??? ???

For the younger OOFers, if you have never seen One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest it's worth a couple of hours of your life. A few very young faces in there too. The warden is apparently the real warden of the asylum, and some of the patients were real patients.

General Car Chat / caliper seal kits
« on: 27 July 2013, 22:00:26 »
Has anyone any first hand experience of suppliers of caliper seal kits? I've had a quick Google, one supplier is Brakes International, but if their seal kits are as good as their Senator front discs, I'll need another kit in 3 or 4 thousand miles  ???

I set off doing bottom ball joints on SWMBO's Smart. One was completely fubar'd, the other side's dust seal was goosed (but I'd bought a kit of two from MB anyway), dust seals on both track rod ends were also split, but I noticed that the piston dust seal in both calipers were both worn through. Linings on all 4 pads looked as though they were ready for parting company with the back plate, discs need replacing too. I've yet to ask at MB what's available in the way of seals - but suspect that they'll be just be able to sell me a 'refurbished' caliper.  ???  ;)

General Discussion Area / PAYE
« on: 27 July 2013, 12:00:55 »
Last week SWMBO received a surprise letter from HMRC to say that she'd not paid enough tax.  ??? HTF you end up short changing the tax office when you're on PAYE is a mystery to me.  ??? The answer given was that it was something to do with the yearly allowance being divided up incorrectly ie 12 or 13  pay packets a year (or 52 & 53 pay packets a year for the very few of us in the world that are weekly paid)

Anyway, I got mine today too. Apparently I also under paid HMRC by almost £200 last tax year. It seems that the outside company that does our pay/tax in the land of Beanz has done the same as ASDA's pay firm.

Anyone else had an under payment letter?  :-\  :-\

General Discussion Area / rubber seal
« on: 08 July 2013, 13:10:59 »
At some time, unbeknown to me, a bottle of turps was spilled onto the top of our camping beer fridge while it was stored in the garage. I obviously cleaned it up when found, but, the turps has impregnated the seal, consequently, anything now stored in the fridge comes out with a whiff of turps  :'(. I contacted the manufacturer for help, only to be told that they don't supply the seal, nor do they now sell a replacement lid for it.  ???
I've had a Google, & the best I can find is a stick on seal of similar dimensions to the D section ie about 1/4" tall
Any suggestion anyone?

11 spectators hurt in Senior's race. http://www.newsletter.co.uk/sport/motorcycling/north-west-200/tt-2013-eleven-people-hurt-in-crash-1-5172931 Apparently he was doing 170+mph and walked away!

I hope it never happens, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was pressure put on organisers to stop the Manx TT. Already there's been one death ... a Japanese lad

Have a look at Wikipedia. The first year it was run 1907, the average race speed of the winner, on a Matchless, was 38.21mph. The average speed now for the fastest lap (one lap is 37 3/4 miles is 131.671 mph  :o :o :o :o

I think it'd take me all afternoon to do a lap  ;D ;D ;D

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / RIP my power sounder
« on: 07 June 2013, 14:58:55 »
I fitted a brand new power sounder to my car last year sometime. I wanted to start the car today to attack the manifold to down pipe exhaust leak, needless to say, the battery was a flat as a very flat thing. So I connected my battery charger up, and shortly after the PS kept chirping & wailing every now & then for half a sec or so. I tried to bear with it but for the neighbours' sake I unplugged it. A few hours later after there was a bit of charge in the main battery I tried again - same as before.
I'm glad I spent £60 ( :-\) on something that has lasted a year  :'(

and the downpipe to manifold gaskets are £10odd each!  ???

What's happened to my 'full screen' when I want it on Youtube?  :-\

It just stays the same size as the middle setting, but goes to top left of screen. It does it both on my laptop & the main PC. It never used to.  :-\

I've a couple of computer fans with red, black & white wires going to the pcb. Red & black are obviously 12v & 0v (Yes, I know Mark  ;) )

Out of interest, what's the white one likely to be for?  :-\
