brake drums
« on: 28 October 2009, 16:40:14 »

bit of advise please  :y

been given a citroen ax
rear near side drum is siezed on solid.  ( hand brake solid )
trying to remove the drum i have tried  ............... in no perticular order ...........
beating the sh*t out of it with a 3 pound lump hammer. ( no luck but very satisfying  :y :y )

removed hub cap and circlip and tried to undo the 32mm nut ........... idea was to to put the wheel on and spin it all off in one go  :y ( is the nut on a standard thred ??  ............. eh bent a 2 foot long piece of scaffold pipe on the t bar and socket  :'( :'(

relieveing some of the pressure by undoing the bleed nipple    :'(

i have not got a impact gun and socket but i do have a gallon of unleaded and a box of matches  :-/

any advise would be good

cheers steve

I got middle daughter a saxo for her 17th. It had been parked on someones drive for nearly a year when I picked it up and both rear brakes were solid. Managed to beat the one into submission with a lump hammer, the other wouldn't budge. So I dragged the locked wheel on the trailer with lots of revs. Ended up getting a cold steel chisel to it in the end and splitting the drum.

The only way of getting the drum off is by removing the 32mm nut (it is a standard thread).  The circlip holds the bearing into the drum so if you have to drive it anywere put it back in first.   Once you have the nut off slacken the handbrake cable and try hitting it whilst levering it at the same time. Chances are this still wont work and you'll have to get a slide hammer on it.
