Omega 2.0 to 3.0 Turbo
« on: 03 February 2013, 18:38:03 »

Hello.
Greetings from Estonia :)

I bought the car few years back with failed engine, then threw a c20let in it. Later fitted holset hx35 and some time after that, melted a piston :'(, but managed to get 244km/h on a standing mile competition.
After that, decided to turbocharge a v6.

The gearboxes dont seem to like that torgue that c20let and x30xet produce:

OMC 2012

Now working on fitting bmw six speed transmisson.

Nice car mate  :y
Have you done any mods to the engine?
What gearbox are you running, R28?
Is it working well, except for the gearbox issues?

The engine is 100% stock.
It came from 2000 or stmth mv6.

Im running about 0,45bar boost at the moment, but unfortunetly havent dynoed it yet.

In winter I am working on getting rid of temporary solutions and making the engine look nicer.

making a rough calculation

original 211 hp as stock and when new..

assume 5-6 hp loss from the new one.. 205 hp

205 * 0.45=92.25 hp

assume %12 loss from turbo power

92 - 11 = 81 hp

205+81 =286 hp roughly ..

Thanks :)
I do all the fabrication myself.
Today I managed to get vecra b aluminum rocker covers.

Undortunetly, the opening for oil (need some help here, how to name it ???) is located badly, and the plenum needs cutting to make it fit.
My solution was making new opening for oil.
Some crappy cell pictures:

Why not?
Plasic is for toys, engines are made from metal.

If you get excessive crank case pressure (very common on V6) you will blow the crank seal rather than the camcover seals. ;)
Vectra has different breather system so can use the (ugly) metal covers.

I can add extra breater hoses from the covers to overcome this problem.
Need to install the catch can soon...
Thanks for sharing :)

btw, yes, vectra covers are ugly ;D

[/quote]

I am still waiting for the flywheel to be matched with the bmw disk and audi aan pressure plate, then I will begin to modify the gearbox.
Most of the gearboxes were broken when the engine was c20let. The turbocharger was the same but boost was 1,3bar compared to the v6 0,4.bar .It made much more power then. The v6 has only broken 1 gearbox.
Also, I have a Sachs Race engineering 4-paddle ceramic cluch, which helps to destroy the boxes, beacause it is quite an on-off type and stresses the drivetrain when shifting hard.
I think last summer took 6-7 gearboxes :( Lost track on counting...
I have been looking for a saab b308 for a while, but none avalible, cheap :)

The v6 is work in progress, I installed the turbo in less than month and using primerly the parts that I had lying in the garage. Need to get the CR down and larger injectors, then there is some hope for power. :)

How does this person drive?
An omega gearbox does not withstand a lot of power if it is being used hard.

What type of gearboxes do you use Taavi?
R25, R28 or R30? (R25 is from 2.0l-2.5l, R28 3.0l and R30 3.2l)
250, 280 and 300nm

I use R25 because their easyer to find.
I also have destroyed one r28.
Always the 3rd gear brakes down, and I have visually compared r25 to r28 and the 3rd gear gears ar the same. Some other are bit beefier in r28 but dont rememer which.
R30 is no-no here, impossible to find.

In the past, there was an omega A with 4.0 irmscher engine, which destroyed lots and lots boxes even with the standard 200kw so yes, omega manual boxes s*ck.

checking the net getrag 240 can handle around 300 hp and 300 ft lbs of torque .. but that info not official.. besides some other drivers also destroyed 3rd gear.. :-\

and from forums,  if I understand correctly getrag 240 is swappable with getrag 260 and zf320 without problems.. although ratios are a bit different.. but 260 and zf is stronger..

I was recommended getrag 265 or maybe a ZF box by a tuning company here, when I said I was after 350whp
But you have to rebuild the clutch housing to fit and a new propshaft

bimmers swapping getrag 240 to zf320 says its a direct swap.. probably on the omega shaft may require some work..  dont know about clutch housing :-\

no, gearbox swap is not easy.

BMW getrag 240 uses a separate bellhousing and so can be changed for a 265 easily ( also with separate bellhousing ) There is no separate bellhousing for the Opel 54 degree V6.

I have an Omega 3.0 track car with a standard R25 - and an Omega A 4-litre track car. No gearbox problems in over 10,000 track miles. The Getrag 240s are built of rock.

The new box will be GS6-37DZ
Its rated to 370Nm, but lets see how it holds up. The GS6-56 would have been perefect since it has 560Nm rating but its not cheap.
I have also considered getrag 265 but it aint so easy to find here.

Vectra has different breather system so can use the (ugly) metal covers.

Not if your breathers are clear and the cam covers are only 8Nm tight. I've used the metal covers on my engine(s) for years without any issue whatsoever, although I do stress to people that it is primarily an aesthetic choice and that the notion that you can cure cam cover gasket problems by using metal covers is a nonsense. In that instance if you DO leave the breathers etc without attention then you're asking for trouble, but otherwise there is no problem with using the metal covers per se. On an Omega the oil filler is virtually unreachable with the metal cam covers anyway so it's a daft choice on these cars irrespective of breather design haha!

The gearbox converison is now finished. The clutch operates and new prop shaft is ready. Took it for a small spin and everything works great.

Meanwhile painted the ugly vectra rocker covers to make them look better:

IRL they look better.

pressure regulator - just go to nearest "shrot" and look for audis/vw/bmw. they usually have 4.0bar fuel pressure regulator. but - be prepared for weakest fuel line soon to give up :)
at least - that is my experience on my V6 Calibra.
p.s. have you considered dragracing too? :)

Hi,
Engine bay looks like this now:

I am running about 0.8bar boost at the moment and borrowed friends gTech yesterday.
0-100km/h

Had very little traction with 1. and 2. gear.

50-100km/h took less time than 0-50 ;D

Quarter mile speed shows that there is some power.

100-190km/h

hmm...
Nice project...

I have some questions about your OMEGA.

1) you didn't say anything about turbo. Which brand? Model?

2) What about ECU?

3) Now running on custom Headers or stock manifold?

4) Exhaust system?

Thanks

How do you get on with the supposed over heating issues?  I'll be fitting 2 further electric water pumps to help flow the water round the system  :y

So far the overheating issues seem BS. Havent had any problems with coolant temp. Maybe it becomes an issue on a track days but not when daily driving or at top speed and drag races.

For max cooling capabilities I bought brand new radiator and expansion tank too. Also I got rid of the factory oil cooler and fitted an oil to  air type unit. I dont have the three way valve in the heater circuit neither, because no air-con.

Or I am just been lucky so far ;D

Ah ok, very interesting! How did you go about ridding the car of the oil cooler?  I've tried to fit an air oil cooler myself but the sandwich plate that would fit between the oil filter and block won't fit because there's a sensor right near it!

I took the oil feed and return from stock oilcooler channels.

Managed to get 12,7@ 183,5 km/h at this years last 1/4 mile competition.
Also found that it weights around 1600kg so its far too heavy.

Decided to get a lighter car so omega is going for parts. PM if need something.

End of story.

Turned out that the e30 I got needs too much work to get it in the condition I want so decided to swap the enigine I got for in into omega.

Luckily the manifiold I made for e30 seems to fit omega also so not too much fabrication needed. :)

Hi again

Taavi,

-on which RPM motor goes for " Full Boost " ? because HX35 is kind of big turbo for 3.0L engine.

- How can you fight with that much traction when you lunch it? installed LSD?

and at the end... please give us the specs of tires and Rims you use in city. ???

Hi.
Great job in opel motors.
Try to use biger injectors (like c20let) & EGT senzor and wide  band  o2 senzor in the exhaust system. Try to save the engine to overheating.
Engine managment is chipped or fully stock ?

Sorry.im not to good to english

Hi again,

The turbo failed in the end of July and since then it been sitting idle, until I bought new one in the begining of October.

Bough some slicks for seasons last 1/4 mile competition:

(wrong rims)

New turbo is holset hx55 running 1,4-1,5 bar boost, and maxing out my 800cc injectors :D

Best time 11,96 best speed yet to be determined when the results are in.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i01CQ1J71i8

Hope to get to dyno this week.
