General Car Chat / A Bit Weird
« on: 29 March 2024, 22:58:26 »
It's bit Weird. The Mrs and I have always had our own cars, I had a Volvo XC70 that was used quite a bit for work, lugging stuff around. But I've given up my little business, the XC70 had quite a few little niggly things (Auto gear stick would stick, dull headlights, broken door handle, hand brake cable) nothing terminal but hard to get fixed and annoying. Also, I just didn't use it much. The garage would tick me off for not putting enough miles on it.

So, with annual service, MOT, Tax, and insurance all due, I got shot of it, with Mrs and I now sharing a V70 (she uses it more than I do). I'm not a petrolhead and see cars as purely functional. So far I've seen no compelling reason or had any big urge to get something and it's been quite nice not having to think about stuff that needs doing. But it's just a bit odd  ???

General Car Chat / Get A Dashcam! Just do it
« on: 07 October 2023, 20:26:50 »
Get a dashcam.

You're driving along, early evening, low sun, and rain, heading North so sun is behind. Within the speed limit and no drink or drugs.

A person runs out and hits the offside front quarter of your car. Head through windscreen. An eye witness turned out to be unreliable. Now of course the "experts" will have an opinion but as far as the police are concerned it's hard evidence that matters. A dash cam may or may not have recorded the actual impact, but it will show what did NOT happen IE: a front-on collision, and it will aslo have recorded other circumstances and events.

This is not me, but someone I know who is now a mental wreck due to the uncertainty, and serious injury of another.

General Discussion Area / Wickes
« on: 16 June 2023, 13:29:06 »

So Fraser Longden the COO of Wickes, the DIY chain of stores has said "shoppers with trans-critical views are 'bigots' who 'are not welcome in our stores anyway"

Is this a Gerald Ratner moment? Why comment at all? Just stfu and welcome any customers who want to spend money.
He was taking part in an online gay/trans event but of course his comments got picked up.

General Discussion Area / Flying? Is it me or what
« on: 02 March 2023, 00:04:49 »

Before retirement I used to fly a lot both work and leisure. Mostly USA and Europe.

In recent years however I seem to get ill, maybe not every flight but very often. Coldy, snotty, fluey thing. Just back from a week holiday. Fell ill two days after arriving. Sore throat, snot, drippy nose, cough. Just about ok to fly back with lots of medication. Still coughing up gunge.

Is this now a thing that is maybe being kept quiet? or is it me? It doesn't happen when I drive abroad.

General Discussion Area / Am I thick or what?
« on: 30 December 2022, 23:51:12 »
I don't drive as much as I used to, but still a reasonable amount.

This week on the M4 to the wildlands of Berkshire, I saw signs " Red X Enabled"

Yes of course I know about hard shoulders being used as an extra lane and an X indicating that it should not be used. But what the F does that wording mean ? How is some thicko like me supposed to understand that. Does it mean don't use it or what?

I thought "Red X" was a fuel additive

General Car Chat / Sports car for an old git
« on: 31 March 2022, 23:54:19 »

I've never had a sports car. I'm not a real petrolhead, but I have a bit of an itch to scratch.

Cars like midgets & MGBs, spirfires are fine, but actually a bit dull, and I'm not sure I'd fit into one. I certainly could not do any renovation.

Chrysler Crossfires are kind of ugly, but have an appeal. Quite cheap. Merc SLK under the bodywork I think. Enough Oooomph for me. Never sat in one or driven one, but they look quite roomy. Quite fancy a convertible auto, but I could live with manual and maybe hard top.

Any opinions amongst all you experts out there?

I've seen a cyclist (postman) getting whacked by a car door with serious injury. Sort of makes sense, but I'd like to know how they will enforce this one . . . .

Just WTF was he expecting?

General Discussion Area / The National Trust
« on: 26 May 2021, 20:13:18 »

I've been a member for a few years, I can't say I actually use it that much but I agreed with what it does IE: Preserve buildings and land of national significance.

However the last year or so it had been moving along the "Woke" trail of raising issues about links to slavery blah blah, removing statues etc.

My membership renewal is next month and I was seriously considering whether to cancel the direct debit. I made this known to them

The boss has just stepped down (jumped or pushed? I don't know). Excellent ! for now I remain a member.

So, I showed 'em   ;D
