Auto Gearbox query
« on: 18 October 2006, 21:53:55 »

Hi

I have a 3l Elite with a knackered auto box that won't shift above 2nd gear, in drive it puts itself into safety mode, moves pretty damn quickly until then too.

I also have a 2.5 v6 GLS with an auto box but a knackered engine.

The question is will a 2.5 auto box fit onto a 3l elite and if so does the torque convertor, etc need to be transplanted too.

Not sure what the problem is on the 2.5 but it just won't start and as its done 250k I didn't think it was worth bothering with but the 3L is a beaut and has a superb engine.

The 2.5's autobox (AR25) cannot take the torque of 3.0 box (AR35).

Have to checked fluid level - most autobox problems can be resolved if fluid is right...

How do you check the fluid level, I can't see a second dipstick under the bonnet like I was expecting.

I had the car checked by the local bosch specialist who checked the electronics on the gearbox and all they could tell me was that its a definite physical gearbox issue.

Do you think it could be something as simple as the transmission fluid level?

Worth a go...

There is no dipstick - with engine running and transmission warmed up (ie take for a spin), it should be at the level of the filler plug on side of box.

Worth checking the level or even changing the fluid.....mine was missing gears so checked the level last night, it was to high and dropped about a litre out......so far the fault is gone!

How can you physically fill a gear box (auto or manual) way above the filler plug level?

Yep, you crank up one side and fill it to the brim, but when you lower the jack the box is overfilled. Not easy to get the car level with the engine running and high up enough to crawl under...
