Title: Removing plug from driver's door motor
Post by: terry paget on 24 December 2018, 15:46:05
3.2 ex-plod manual saloon
Daughter is now home with her Omega with failed driver's door lock. I am struggling to remove the plug from the locking motor. I can get my left hand on to the plug, can press together the 2 ears to release the plastic retaining clips, but cannot get enough force on it to wriggle it out.
I have done it in in the past, but cannot now. Old age? I asked my 40 year old son to try, he failed too. Please, gentlemen, is there a trick, a technique, to do it?

Release the inner handle and lock button rods, undo the three torx bolts securing the lock mechanism to the door and move the whole gubbins to where you can get two hands on it ;)

Some time ago now but I am sure that I released the operating cable from the inside bottom of the door to enable the motor to be lifted above the access hole The lock mechanism of coarse has to be freed from the door. The cable can be clipped back when the job is finished. Open up the plastic clips to release the plug.

Yes, I had trouble reaching it and found it easier to undo its mountings to make it more accessible. :y

Thanks for the quick response gentlemen. Doc G's method worked a treat. The cable restricted how far out I could pull the motor, but now I have it out I shall release the cable inside the door.

What's the best order of reassembly of reassembly?

descendingJob completed early Christmas day. Thanks to all for help.
Having dismantled things carelessly, I reassembled as follows:

inserted lock assembly into door
plugged cable into solenoid
fitted pull up rod to locking lever (blue clip)
manouevered lock into position, with pull up rod through hole in door and outside opening rod into correct green hole
attached lock to door 3 torx screws
attached inside opening rod to top lock lever brown clip
attached central locking lever to lever bottom left brown clip.
Job is made tricky by poor access to door interior. Above shot was taken with wife's small camera.

Was it the locking motor that had to be changed?

I don't think so, I heard it clonking away as I dismantled things. I made hard work of the job, and replaced the whole solenoid/lock assembly with a spare I had lying around. I reckon it was the lock itself that had failed, but that does not fit too well with the fact that my daughter ran the car for 2 months simply by leaving it unlocked every night. I have no way of testing the solenoid now that everything is assembled and working OK.

Checking continuity between pins in the socket. with the socket upright, the locating pin at the bottom, and numbering pins top to bottom 1,2,3 and 4,5,6 there is continuity beween 23,26,36,56.Not sure what that tells us, except that the solenoid is not dead.

Actually tells you nothing...

Quite so.
Here is a pic of the two locks. On the left is my spare, the other is the suspect lock.

This pic is the dodgy lock.

Looks to me like the dodgy lock is stuck in the wrong position. I can push it back a little, but cannot pull it forward. Compare the 2 locks above, LH lock is the one I installed.
Furthermore, I can easily move the solenoid on the failed assembly, it ain't stuck. I reckon a bit broke off the lock catch and has jammed the lock. The RAC man somehow got the door open, and slammed it shut, but it was never latched shut.

The first picture in this thread is of the back of the dodgy lock, though I cannot see how it helps.

My apologies for posting 3 identical pictures. Reason is on first posting the image was tiny, so I repeated the exercise - twice. Dropbox no longer supports Windows XP so now I struggle on my Windows 10 laptop, and am still learning.

Possibly a striker plate issue rather than the lock judging by the wear...

Also amount of paint inside the door suggests a lot of previous repairs, not surprising given it's previous use...

Also highly likely that the seatbelt/clasp has been shut in it at some point too...

By back I meant the other side to the ones shown we may be able to determine the cause from that side
