3L V6 into 2.2 (petrol) facelift - easy or difficult?
« on: 19 August 2017, 09:50:44 »

I've come across a facelift 2.2 petrol CDX going very cheap that is almost entirely rust free - tiny amount of surface rust at lower edge of rear door shuts that could easily be stopped in its tracks.

Trouble is, the current owner is removing the engine and gearbox for a classic car project.

I have a spare 3L V6 engine and box, but is it an easy transplant?

Guessing the front clip will need to be changed out, but what about things like the exhaust hangers, inner wing mounts for header tanks, etc.?

It will be quite involved. 2.2 was DBW whereas the 3.0 is a cable throttle, so the pedal assembly will need to be changed. ABS unit probably won't talk to the 3.0 ECU, so that would need to come from a cable throttle V6 and not sure if the 2.2 ABS was 4 channel.. so maybe some extensive wiring and brake plumbing to do.

Diff ratio will be wrong for the 3.0 for anything other than drag racing, most likely.
Instrument panel is different but not sure if that can be config'd to suit a 4 pot using tech 2. :-\
Not sure if engine mounts on the front subframe were the same or if that was different...
Complete engine / transmission loom from the 3.0 would be needed and you'd have to be careful that everything connects correctly to the car loom as you're mixing 2 generations of engine electronics.

It's not the job of a weekend. If it was going to that hassle, I might be tempted to make the new engine a V8 instead... 8)

Or fit a Z20LEx  ;)

Subframe will be fine and loom should be plug and play :y

Again not a weekend job, but certainly more feasible...

Hmmm... not sounding like a go-er.

Might just buy it for the 4 good doors.

Thanks for the replies.

If it's rust free pop another 2.2 lump in there? With a manual gearbox they are not bad going, they are also a sheer pleasure to work on thanks to space around them.
