Omega General Help / brake PROBLEM!
« on: 26 September 2012, 08:32:51 »
as above, my brakes have decided to do the dirty and i just want to try and sure myself up before spending the money!,
symptoms are:

1 pedal travels to within one inch of the floor
2. hardly any braking power, if i stand on them literally the front corner will lock up
3. pedal feels very spongey and doesn't pump up like there is air in the system.

I think it's the master cylinder but just need any other ideas before i spend the money, frondt disks and pads were done maybe six monthsa ago.

thanks.

I will probably go for the "claw " type as if I remember rightly the ones with smaller hooks tend to slip in quite an explosive manner ... very frightening

Will prob go for these....what do you think

I used those ones as well and they worked fine, just keep even pressure and take it slowly and keep your head back!!, getting the springs off the car is easy, the second side will be twice as fast!!

Thank you very much for the replies so far, very helpful, I will know much more when I fetch the car on Monday and get it back to my garage, 3hr drive from Lisbon, wish me luck, but plan to change the oil and all the filters as suggested, I will also look at the brakes and see what needs doing there if anything, this car has been used as a daily driver, so I don't expect too much horror!

I have owned Vauxhalls in the past and always found them to be very reliable and trouible free.

I have in the past owned a Mitsubishi delica 2.8 tdi, my first ever diesel, I had a bit of experience cleaning the injectors, replacing nozzles and re-building the pump on that, not an experience I would gladly repeat I must say.

Also encountered the cam chain and tensioner on that engine, and assume from RobG's brief post that this engine has a chain and tensioner.
So thinking out loud before even checking the car I should maybe be prepared for the possibility of tackling fitting a new tensioner.
Bringing me neatly to my next questions,

is this fairly easy? and is it possible to get hold of a workshop service guide for this car fairly easily?
I don't mean a haynes manual, but a proper garage manual used by vauxhall,
I used to have one for the the deli and it was worth it's weight in gold.
Here is a link for the old girl if you want to take a squiz, please don't whince at the price, its normal here  ;D

for those that have welders it's great!! weld a washer to the screw head then a bolt to the washer and wind it out, if you have no welder then mole grips it is!

I agree with the boy, if you have that many weights on one wheel i would be thinking buckled wheel or out of round tyre, i can't believe the tyre shops don't pick up on things like this?

o.k R28!!
i've done a bit of research on this matter and it seems all the boxes are marked R25-R28 irrespective of the inards, just for info the way to tell them apart is by the alpha code which is the first two letters on the gearbox here's a table

Alphacode
20SE, X20SE, X20XEV R25 Variante 1 JJ, GJ
Y22XE R25 Variante 1 GK
Z22XE, X20DTH R25 Variante 2 HA
X25XE, Y26SE R25 Variante 1 JL, GK
X30XE R28 JM, GL
Y32SE, Y22DTH R30 HP
25DT, X25DT R25 Variante 2 JP
Y25DT R30 EG

so that's what my search will involve looking for a box with JM/GL/HP/or EG Alphacode, if anyone has one PM me!!

now another problem i've been thinking about is my 2.2 petrol is drive by wire, does anyone know if the let's are drive by wire or will this invole a new peddle and a wire?

thanks,
Rich.

I agree with that, Aus is incredibly expensive for second hand cars (my Father lives there), New Zealand is the place to be!! looks like turners will help you as well, a very reputable firm when i was a young`un´ I used to buy my cars from them to flip them which is how i afforded to leave the country!

I am thinking of doing the conversion as I have a desmond at the moment and my wifes polo is faster (not as comfy ofcourse!) and have been researching what needs changing, from what i can gather it will sit on the same mounts although one mount may need adjusting to accept the turbo pipe as it sits low, gearbox wise it will bolt up but does anyone know whether my box from the 2.2 petrol will handle the increase in power and my box has a long reach gear shifter!! hardly race spec! is there anything that can be done to shorten the shift so to speak,  i've read that you can't run Aircon with this motor in there can anyone verify this as aircon is something i like to have, my biggest stumbling block would be wiring it in which is the part I really have no idea about, Radiators and intercoolers shouldn't be a problem they sit under the bumper along with the air intake i believe, if anyone has researched this as well and can shed any light it would be much appreciated,
thanks,

Rich.
