Worst Fear Question "Is It My Head Gasget" ?
« on: 16 September 2006, 14:06:22 »

My Omega has been sat for about 3 weeks when i was away on my hols

Drove to my mates yesterday and after a bit the temp went sky high stop checked and there was bugger all water in it as in none in the header tank filled her up after a slow trundle to get off the M1, She seamed fine after.

Anyway was replaceing the Dis pack to day and i checked the dip stick and oil cap to make sure they were fine and Yep No problems there nice cleanish oil. Removed the two Breathers from the rocker cover and it had some oil in them but also to my horror white milky stuff as in water in the oil not load only alittle bit.

Now could this just be condensation after a 3 week stand or is it the Damn Head Gasget whats the best way of checking to see if a head gasget has gone ?

Thanks

Depressed Craig if it is the head gasget

If no water on dipstick, less likely to be hg.  Coolant loss could be due to HBV, hence the DIS failing...  ...bloked breather always seem to have a yellowy sludge...

the dis pack never failed it was just replaced as i bought one to fix a problem but it turned out not to be the dis pack so i chucked the new on in anyway.

Ooooo so the breather can collect a milky oil in them ?

this might not be the head gasget then.

Still dont know where all the water went

If it smells of exhaust gases in coolant bottle, thats a sure sign that hg gone. Also a compression test would show if a problem...

HGF on an Omega - doubt it!!

Oil cooler maybe, condensation due to lack of use probably. a resonable paced 50 mile run should clear it.  ;)

Thanks Chaps Ill keep a close eye on the water level.

Its just strange my Volvo 480 being 17 odd years old sits for like 3 months and runs fine everytime.

It was the yellow cream sludge in the breather pipes that set off alarm bells and that most of the water had vanished.

Ill see if i can track down where all that water went.

Has anyone else had all their water vanish with no trace

I've had intermittent coolant loss, couldn't trace it at all. Ignored all the suggestions about it being HBV. Then one morning, started her up, scrapped the ice from the windscreen, and noticed a big coolant puddle under car. Traced it to HBV, only leaked when climate set to heat...

The HBV is a bugger for loosing coolant, and should always be the first port of call. Very easy job wih the scuttle removed (also an easy job). Check this first -

I had simelar symptoms recently, just a little mayo on the oil cap, but it hasn't returned, and has only been apparent in this damp weather, so no concerns of HGs thankfully.

If it's due, or if you're not sure when last done, do an oil and filter change using good quality GM 10/40 semi-synth oil.

I traced my leak to the Aux coolant pump.. which I shall we say... temporarily repaired :)

I also had one on the bottom of the Rad drain tap.

Check all the obvious external areas such as hoses and joins and HBV and Rad etc, before suspecting anything terminal :)

Well I am alittle stumped.

Went for a drive yesterday to my GF Parents there and back and checked the water this morning and the level is normal no loss at all. Had it Running Checked all the pipes i cud see nothing leaking no water dripping out at all.

I would rather know why it lost so much water than it just stop.

With Out sounding to silly where on a 2Litre 4 pot is the HBV and what does it look like ?

Markiec it has had about 6 litres of water over 2 days which i think is a massive amount but none as from yesterday, a freind told me to keep an eye on the header tank cap it may be faulty as it hisses when the car is stopped like its letting out pressure which i thought would be normal

Thanks

If it is the HBV that is causing the coolant loss, then what you describe is not as strange as it would seem.  The HBV will be diverting the coolant depending on the settings of the climate control (on mine total loss on anything but HI, others the opposite).

Craig the HBV is next to the Dis Pack at the rear of the engine.

In response to the hissing it sounds to me a possible thermostat problem not opening fully if at all, have you noticed whether the car is gettiing too hot. when the car is running can you feel any bubbling in the top hose at all.

Is it the cap that hisses, or somewhere else in engine bay?

Its def the cap hissing.

i am going to see if i can get a replacment header tank as the one i have the collent level sensor is caput, so i can atleast keep an eye on the level if it drops again.

ill have a look at the HBV yomorrow to see if i can finf it and check it over for leaks but the level seams to stay now not dropping
