Gold with a black leather bonnet? Did it come off the production line like that?

Actually, when I truly learnt how to drive was after I passed my test.  In my case, when they gave me a clapped out little yellow Morris Ital van, £1m worth of liability (we didn't have traditional insurance, but a bond in place), and my boss's parting words were "go do your worse"

;)

And you've followed that mantra to the letter ever since!  :P  ;D

Just been watching a couple of Edgar Wallace B-Feature films from the 1960s; poor dramas, but great for spotting some of today's actors in minor roles and, especially, the cars of the period used as street furniture.
I did manage to identify most of them!  :-[

As i had a motorbike first, (Greeves 250cc twin road bike), my first "car" was a Reliant Regal soft top, which i could drive on my bike licence. Drove that for about three years and by then my Dad had a Mk 1 Viva. It luckily had a very similar gearbox layout to the three wheeler, so, Dad gave me a few runs out and i passed my test in that. Probably couldn,t go down the self taught route these days, as it seems all driving school orientated now. ???

Unknown to my parents, at 13 on a Bedford(?) 3 ton tipper lorry on private roads around our house and grounds, which was a market garden business situated within what used to be the Duke of Grafton's Wakefield Lodge estate. http://www.parksandgardens.org/places-and-people/site/7584?preview=1
Whenever possible, I would 'borrow' one of the business vehicles, and drive all over the estate, also on to quiet public roads when I felt brave. I also 'borrowed' my step-father's Ariel Square 4 combination for the same.
Since driving is essentially a required life skill nowadays, I feel all youngsters at 13 on should have the opportunity to drive on private roads, preferably under supervision  ::). I taught both mine on a local disused airfield, for which they were both very grateful.
I passed my test in a '55 sit up and beg Ford Pop. :y

I started on a little grey Ferguson tractor (yesterday I went to the North Bucks Country Show...could not resist it, I had to sit on one. Brought back many memories)
My first road car I learnt in and passed my test in was a 1964 Morris 1100. :y Also had a few drives of dad's Austin A50 ;)

I had an Austin A50 terbs. Lovely comfy bench front seat and a very sloppy column gear change. Absolute rust bucket too. ;D

I learned unofficially in father's upright Ford 10. On turning seventeen I put L plates on the family Austin A40 Somerset, mother sat beside me, and I drove around. Passed my test within 6 weeks.

I am still learning to drive after 61 years, now in Vauxhall Omegas. Every fright, every error, is another lesson.
