General Discussion Area / Region 3 DVDs
« on: 24 October 2009, 17:08:42 »
Interesting problem - hope someone has some ideas.

I returned from Singapore with a few genuine dvds - they are region 3 NTSC and my home theatre is NTSC/PAL/Multi. Cannot get any of them to play - just says "wrong region". I have run the mulitregion hack on my system - have tried with other players including pc - all give same result. Any ideas?

General Discussion Area / Electric Garage Doors
« on: 27 April 2009, 23:23:55 »
My in laws are struggling with age to open and close the garage door - I am thinking of installing a remote operating system for them. Before I go out and splash the cash - does anyone have any views on doing this more cost effectively than £4-500.

The door they have has a canopy system which is the most difficult to convert I understand.

General Discussion Area / Parents
« on: 13 April 2009, 22:34:41 »
My parents are in their 80s.

I drove to Manchester to visit this Easter and decided to buy them a new flat screen TV as a surprise. Installed it and they thought it was wonderful but a bit too big - "but the one we have is only a year old". To me it looked like the one they had had for years. Anyway they were adamant it was only a year old and had been replaced by my brother in law - I assumed he had got a good deal on a CRT. I thought I was going mad - took back the new set and got a refund. Travelled back home - then got a phone call from my mother

- "we have been checking and it is in fact 10 years old!!"

General Discussion Area / Pressure Washers
« on: 13 April 2009, 22:57:32 »
I bought a cheapie Xtreme pressure washer a year or so ago. One by one the bits have been breaking and now the lance has split.

I googled to try and find spares of which there are none (but apparanetly B & Q have an own brand that fits) - but what amazed me was the number of complaints that people have with the lance splitting or the hose gun splitting and the product is still on the shelves inculding Homebase and Argos.

So VX is not alone in not owning up to problems with their products!!

General Discussion Area / Quality of paint/lacquer
« on: 13 April 2009, 10:44:46 »
My Omega has done 83000 miles in 8 years.

My Signum (mainly wife's car) has done 26000 in 18 months.

The stone chippings on the front of the Signum are far more extensive than the Omega and yet it goes to the same places - quite a bit of motorway etc. In fact Omega chippings are minimal and there has been no respray on it.

Is the quality of paint the same these days but less laquer or what or is it shape of Signum that makes it more prone? Maybe the Omega was bult to higher standard although Signum is a brilliant car in terms of size, economy and drive - especially on the new Falken ZE912s which cured droning from rear.

General Discussion Area / Omega - Anorak moment
« on: 07 March 2009, 08:35:24 »
Under Freedom of Information act I have asked DVLA for total registrations of Omega models by year 1994 to 2003 and how many in each year are still registered i.e. on road. I thought they would tell me to bugger off - but got a letter saying they are looking into it. Phoned them - my request is apparently unusual (surpised at that !!). Probably get the bugger off letter next week.

Just about to do the Manchester and back run in Omega. Signum has gone to Devon for a few days rest.

Thought this might be an interesting one given the time out of production and the high mileages generally covered.

General Discussion Area / Notebook Keyboard HP
« on: 03 March 2009, 23:46:56 »
Bit of a long shot - but does anyone have the instructions to replace the keyboard on an HP Pavilion N5000 series notebook. I can get the part off ebay but not sure what to do when all screws removed and casing does not come off.

General Discussion Area / Insurance business use all drivers
« on: 06 December 2008, 09:52:52 »
Just to alert you to a practice I do not think is bona fide.

I wanted insurance on my wife's Signum for her, me and 2 children all with business use and a mileage of 20000 per annum in total.

I was offered cover by Adrian Flux via Norwich Union. Paid premium and issued with cover note. When actual certificate arrived only my wife covered for business use. Referred back to Flux who confirmed it was covered and would get certificate from Norwich U.

This never came - and have been trying on and off since to get it clarified - Flux just keep issuing cover notes for a month with the cover required written on it. Anyway 6 months on - enough is enough - asked for full refund as I do not want to get into middle of a dispute if there is a claim. Referred matter to Ombudsman and complained to Flux - they are now going to full refund of all premium and I have taken out precisely the cover I want with Elephant same as the Omega - i.e. 4 drivers all business use. Flux should not be doing this. I think this is the 3rd time I have had to have the Ombudsman involved regarding Norwich Union car insurance.

General Discussion Area / Ben Nevis
« on: 02 July 2008, 21:46:19 »
Just got back from Ben Nevis/Fort William - we got to 3500ft just 900ft short of summit but collective decision of our party of 8 (over 55s) was to return because of heavy rain, hail and mist.

Vauxhall sponsor the 4 peaks challenge but not a hope of me doing this. Ben Nevis is massively hard work and I was not expecting so many boulders and so little established path - web sites are a bit misleading. The weather was pretty bad for much of the 5 days we were up there but fantastic scenery. Thighs and knees very stressed!! Never thought I would get down at one point but I did - inspired by Ben Nevis Inn.

We hired 2 brand new Passat diesel estates from Glasgow - weird ignition system and handbrake (there isn't one - it is just a button marked P which disnegages when you drive off )
