Well, yesterday after actually getting 74 miles of driving from it, I drove onto a forecourt with the range showing as 1 mile. 
Average consumption currently around 28mpg. A lot less country lane driving than usual over the last few days though.
Going to give it a sound thrashing later and get it down to more normal levels.

I wish I could see that figure in mine!  Too much driving around town though stops me from doing it!

Average consumption on the V70 is currently showing 20.1-the Elite does a fair bit less-but it's doing trips of three and a half miles each way to work and back and sitting in traffic a good bit especially when coming home.

28mpg out of a 3.2 Auto, theres a pedal to the right called the Accelerator (or Loud Pedal if your from Essex) have a try at using that rather than just pushing the Brake Pedal on and off to make the car go forward.

So what's unusual about that,surely unless you only put a tiny amount in it'll show a range of 72 or any figure greater or lower depending on how much fuel you put in.

You are a brave man filling up at range 1 mile. My memories of Omega ownership include a strong one of always filling up every journey I made. A feeling akin to going to the gallows (I imagine ) came as soon as the red light came on.

The fuel gauge was pretty low, below the quarter mark I think. The range on the fuel computer stated I had 72 miles worth of fuel left. I did just over 72 miles, without putting any more fuel in and didn't run out.
The CID had just been reconfigured from the 2.2dti which it came from, to 3.2 spec which my car is. When The Boy saw the fuel gauge and the range showing 72 miles, he voiced the opinion that it may take a few miles for the car to adjust the figures, as he didn't believe that what was showing on the fuel gauge would equate to 72 miles of driving.

TB - that could explain it.  ..............mostly gentle dual carriageway miles and very little of the usual country lanes is the real answer.
Its now down to 25.6mpg, so normal service soon to be returned. 

I like a challenge DG. Wanted to see if it was doable.

It wont last. Most of the time I drive my chip fat wagon (which has been off the road this week) which saves enough in fuel costs to allow me not to worry about the cost of fuel when driving the Omega.
Having said that, I have slowed down a hell of a lot in the last few years. Even worked out that speed limit signs aren't purely advisory.

My commute is now 2miles, which has badly affected my average economy - it's settled at about 23.5mpg. Add a few journeys that are over 10miles, and well over 300miles from a full tank is normal. Now I try to walk to work most of the time.


On a motorway run, at(or even slightly above) ours and French legal limits, then 400miles is easily achievable. It's been like that since I corrected the cam timing six years ago. But then I consistently got mpg in the low 30's from several 2.0l Capris, which is apparently impossible


I've done about 20miles after the range displayed 0miles, and although it was still running OK, it wouldn't start in the morning.

Hmmm, given that practically the whole 'smart' motorway network now runs at 50MPH all day and all night I regularly see 360 - 390 miles out of the daily driver 3.2.

If the whole tank was commuting, with no pottering around locally, you need to look at that then, as that's low even by 3.2 standards

But it hasn't been regularly serviced, has a failed multirams valve and generally needs a good sorting

Services every 5k, multi-Rams fixed as detailed here, recent cambelt kit fitted by KevinW. Clean breathers, blasted clean at belt time. Recent new plugs, also fitted at belt time. Air filter less than year old, as is fuel filter.

Perhaps it's just a terrible on fuel...

They are poor on fuel, but not that bad, except in town - combination of slushbox and the way it delivers its power from idle. Or if you gun it everywhere

As to your reputation, well, assuming you drive it like the pisshat, then we know its steady (by your mpg on that).

Indeed. It can be done, but, with that high a tedium threshold, I'd buy a diesel pisshat instead.

When I bought my Mv6 it's range was showing at 9 miles, and by the time, i'd test driven it and driven it to the petrol station, it was showing 0 (I think)

In the Jag, the book states:
Fuel capacity: 17g
Fuel capacity to empty: 15g

So to me, that's 2 gallons left at empty. But being lorry fuel, they are keen for you not to run out.


Interestingly, the petrol variant is:
Fuel capacity: 18g
Fuel capacity to empty: 17g

So real fuel has a bigger tank, plus it lets you run it dryer...

That's to say assuming that your mileage hasn't changed, you have doubled your pence per mile. (I assumed 300 miles for £X amount so 23ppm doubling to 56ppm).

If you were doing longer journeys and having to buy more fuel, your economy would improve, so your ppm would stay nearer 23ppm, and if you're using your car less, you wouldn't be using as much fuel. I think the worst I managed from an Omega was 220 miles from a tank. So even on that basis, you would only manage 38ppm and have travelled twice the mileage.

Basically £170 will fill it up twice So either your leaving it idling all day or you have a significant leak.

Are you talking about the first alleged lock down in March, or all of the so called lock downs since? The one we're supposedly on now certainly doesn't seem like that around here.

19.7 Gallons in total. So at a (very generous) 15mpg, that will give me a range of 296 miles.

The Barge tank is 88 litres from memory, so it probably had another weeks worth in it, although the range wasn't too optimistic

Back when petrol was £1.35 a litre, I managed to get over £90 in my estate one evening.

I think its still around that price here (at the BP, anyway).

Mine was rarely filled until it needed it, so always around 72-74l, so frequently hit the £99 cut off limit on the Omega...   ...and at one point I was filling it 3 times or more a week.  Hence it got LPG'd

The Jag has similar issues with Pay at Pump limits.

So mine is almost exactly twice the figures you quote. I'm very used to running around based on those figures, I think I'd be very unhappy to have to go back to a big petrol car.

I think Ii have the best of both worlds, or as close as a pauper can get. C**o averages around 60mpg, I actually averaged a genuine 67 over a tankful in the first lockdown.
The Omega is about 24mpg, but only drive it 3500 miles a year, and enjoy every minute of it.

                Same here, I have the lpg Astra which returns 100 miles per tenner, and the Evo at around 45 per tenner on petrol ( although this can be about 12 miles per tenner on track ) In the Omega I get around 60 miles per tenner lpg.

I'd like the MPG to be better obviously 
My 93 carlton 2.0 petrol with older cav 2.0SEH engine in did 32ish MPG
drove that 10+ years and sold it for more than I paid for it 
had the Omega getting on for 3 years, It hasn't lost any value in depreciation 
It's comfy and suits my needs ,RWD, big boot for my tools etc

If I was driving something that did double the MPG ,I could have saved £4500 on fuel
I Bet your Astra has probably dropped similar or more in depreciation

So, pro rata, my depreciation + fuel, is still less than just your fuel, and the depreciation costs will get smaller on mine the longer I keep it.
As a comparison, Opti's depreciation costs would buy an omega, an astra and a Caribbean holiday.

289ppm was the total cost for 135,000 miles over two years in my Seat Altea.

That is literally everything: deposit, finance, insurance, servicing, tyres, repairs, tax, depreciation, fuel.

£46,568, of which £20,250 was fuel, £10,000 was depreciation and £8,528 for the finance...

That's the hidden cost of motoring, and why the Omega was such good value for money...

Generally putting just over a fiver of juice into Woosh a week (economy 7 overnight charging) for about 200 miles use and the Velar is getting about 2/3 of a tank of diesel (£40) for around 325 miles of use.
