Why is it I can remember the registration number of my very first car and motorcycle........but struggle with anything more recent?

For the record, FUE 756K......1972 Triumph 1500 with FWD.....and NRE 1L a 1973 Garelli Bimatic.

My first car was a Mini GDK198D, which had more filler in it than metal (almost), but I took my test (and passed) in a newer Mini ODK959M.
I can also remember the registrations of my earlier cars and the majority of my more modern cars...probably because I actually liked the cars and enjoyed them even when they broke down (more frequently than not...)
Strangely, I can remember all my girlfriend's names too...

In 1979, I bought a Mini 850 for my wife to learn to drive in (I had a Mini Cooper S then and she wasn't learning in that!). It was reg DON932C. Tried to sell it later to a work mate called Don, but he wasnt interested, so I just flogged it with the car.
A few years later I bought a Triumph 2000 with the reg PAT100M. Thought it would be good for my wife (for obvious reasons ) but she wasn't bothered about a personal registration, so again I let it go with the car
That was two mistakes I made.....

Some of dads first Super Snipe he had OET 315. VdP 3L was 4567 ET. Mk IV Zodiac Executive F633 UDT. 1933 Buick was BAD 876.Siver Cloud III was CHE 45C and the last car he owned was a Mk1 Escort 1300XL and was THE 787N.

In those days the registration indicated where you were from, as most people bought from local garages, and when sold, cars tended to stay locally as cars for sale were generally only advertised in local newspapers. The internet has obviously changed all that and car adverts in local newspapers are a thing of the past. The nearest you get to local registrations is the county or metropolitan district identifiers.

Correct  The Mayoral car used to have EN1 on it ... on loan apparently.

We've made it easy wifey has had her plate since 1987 and I have two, one on retention certificate and the other on the RR both bought from DVLA in 1999, so as long as we keep the dreaded Dementia at bay we should remember them..

There was a car / van rental place on Oldham Road in Rochdale near to Tom Mellor Ford whose fleet of vehicles were registered 1111DK, 2222DK, 3333DK, etc and then the reverse DK1111, DK2222, DK3333 etc. In those days, you just approached the local vehicle taxation office (in the case of Rochdale, in the magnificent Town Hall), and if the number wasn't allocated, for a nominal fee of £5.00 (from memory) you could have it. Try doing that today.....
In the 50's, my father had a Morris Minor with DDK157. He (wierdly) bought an Austin 1800 in 1965 from Ratcliffe Bros. on Halifax Rd in Rochdale and managed to get DDK157C just by 'asking'. My mother also bought a Lambretta 125 scooter from Robinsons in Rochdale around the same time, and got DDK57C on it!
Dispite doing all this, when they were sold, he just let them go with their registration still on them. I suppose, there wasn't the interest in them then.
The surname of a wartime friend of my father was ROW - he approached Birmingham tax office in the good old days, and for a miniscule amount came away with ROW 7.
Talking of Bury registrations - there was an 'interesting' reg knocking around the Burnley area for years in the 80' and 90' s - TEN10T. Not seen it now for years.
I don't particularly see the liking for these abstract personalised registrations people put on their cars that mean absolutely nothing, however an ''interesting' registration, I get..........to a point....

TEN66 used to be knocking about round here years ago .... can't remember on what, but it was just an ordinary, also ran, kind of car.

There is the 'urban myth' about the reg. PEN1S, but that was purely what it was...a myth. Even in 1977, in the early days of the DVLC (as it was then), it would never have been issued.

but PEN15 was issued  though it doesn't seem to be recognised on the gov ved check  but then again, neither does TEN66  and I can't see that having been returned to Swansea

Apparently you can, but it went for more than I was prepared to spend... Besides, it had been off the road since at least 2006, so it had much bigger issues...

Like sills, rear quarters, not running etc, etc

It's about £40 to replace the points and condenser with electronic. Although if it's a common distributor, like a Lucas 45 as used on millions of BL, Rootes etc cars, a complete new distributor is about 50% more and eliminates any wear in the old one. Used them on several cars, and they're money well spent.

Those are good plates, just for their simple / old format. But no one would know their significance unless they knew the family.
Interesting plates that are immediately recognisable for their humour or interesting format are ok in my book, but other non descript plates that mean absolutely nothing to Joe Public always give me the impression the owner has visions 'above their station'.

Always makes me smile when i see a car for sale with the words, "cherished reg plate" or " private plate included" etc. They may have meant something to a previous owner, but very little to anyone else.

Just googled FR to see what happened to her, and was amazed to discover that not only was she previously a Stewardess with BOAC and BCal, both of whom I flew for, but now owns a hotel in Grenada a short distance from the villa we regularly visit. We visited the hotel for lunch last time we were there! It’s a small world.

First car I bought at 16 was a non MOT'd 1960 pale blue Austin mini "seven" My old dad quite rightly forbade me from bringing it home so I was forced to sell it on . The registration number was CGM 96 and it went to an Instructor at the Apprentice traing centre I was at for a whopping £15 profit . CGM was his initials iirc.
I did some electrical work for a chap and he offered to pay me with the buff reg. book and chassis plate for a red and black mini plus a little cash. As it happened I had a school friend with just such a car in his garage about to be scrapped . This was pre DVLA days and all it took was a request for the local council to inspect the vehicle and then once passed the reg could be transferred .
New plates suitably "aged" , chassis plate rivetted on and heads also "aged " and buff book casually placed on seat . One 5 minute inspection later 63 AGA was mine .
Incredibly the number issued to replace 63 AGA on the old mini was .....7 KVD .
Suitable short time later 7 KVD was mine but only on the understanding that no further transfers would be allowed .
63 AGA is still on a dear late friends widows car and I had 7 KVD for nigh on 40 years until I sold it after moving to Ireland , it's on a Porsche Turbo now .
I bought my E24 in the North and it came with the number HIL 6351 . I had to jump through some shady loops to do it but registered it to a friend in Wales and then sold the number on and it now resides on a rather tasty late model E24 Highline 635i. 

Like many of you when I'm asked the reg of any of our vehicles now I'm at a loss and have to refer to photos or run out side to look.

The first real owned and driven car was a much loved MK1 Cortina ASC 405B which I kept for two years and spent wayyy too much on it inc. 1600 x flow , 2000E gearbox and Capri discs . I loved that car and wished I'd kept it instead of buying that 2 year old MGB GT ......Ah well.....
