Cars for Sale & wanted / For Sale ’03 Omega Estate
« on: 06 March 2017, 22:15:52 »
2003 2.6 V6 Omega Estate CD Auto
Mileage currently 139,783 – will increase as used daily
MOT Dec 2017

This car is a workhorse, and whilst not “pretty”, has proved reliable over the last 70K miles in our ownership.  Regularly serviced (Service history with car), the last service being carried out by Serek last year.  Body generally rust free, although rear wings showing early signs of rust this year.  Both front and rear bumpers show signs of car park scrapes on the corners (like it when we bought it).  Fitted towbar and electrics (we’ve never used it to tow).  Mechanically in very good order and reliable, everything works, including heated front seats, all 4 electric windows etc etc.  New cat back exhaust fitted recently and new front wishbones (supplied and fitted by Serek last year).  Four recent tyres.  Supplied with two working keys, and handbook, car pass etc.

Available in approx 1 week due to arrival of replacement Estate.

Looking for £550

Omega General Help / MOT
« on: 23 November 2016, 00:45:21 »
Well the V6 Estate went thro' the MOT today, with only 2 advisories (stone chip on windscreen - same as last year and repaired by Autoglass, and slight corrosion on central brake pipe, again same as last year).  Now on 136K with another years ticket - SWMBO wants to make an effort over Chrismas hols to find a suitable replacement!  More expense tho I have been urging her to consider replacing it for a while.

By the way the GM and the pattern cam cover gaskets from AllGerman are still oil tight :y

General Car Chat / Damaged drivers door mirror
« on: 03 April 2016, 23:41:49 »
Nearly got sideswiped by an idiot in on old white van travelling towards me on Friday. He managed to take out my drivers door mirror, fortunately no other damage. It was a "hit and run", he didn't stop (probably not insured), and disappeared into a large housing estate to prevent me following and getting his details.

Considering a closing speed of approx 60 mph, suprised how resilient the mirror was. The impact split the mirror open and left the actual glass hanging on its electrical connection. I managed to snap it all back together and all lights and functions still working ok. Most of his mirror was lying shattered in the road.

Luckily the only real damage on mine was to the painted mirror cover (badly scuffed, although I've now managed to polish it out today, not at all noticeable), and a cracked Door Mirror Indicator (Repeater) unit.
I have located a new genuine repeater unit (about £20).  Cost of a new mirror is in excess of £500!!!!

Just need to sus out how to strip one of these mirrors down so I can replace damaged part.

To say I was pissed off was an understatement - still could have been a lot worse.

Omega General Help / Update - pattern cam cover gaskets
« on: 13 March 2016, 22:55:50 »
As you know I fitted pattern gaskets to one bank and GM to other on the '03 2.6V6 Estate as a comparison -

At last cam covers done today.  Gaskets and o-rings were brittle, with 5 of the 6 plug wells full of oil - suprised car was running ok with no misfires!!

Drivers bank fitted with Payen gasket set from allgermanparts and gm o-rings, and passenger bank fitted with a gm gasket set and gm o-rings.  As stated before

the Payen set feels as supple and pliable as the gm set, and the fit to the cam cover was same for both types.

Time will tell!! - will update Payen performance vs gm as mileage increases ;)

Plug wells cleaned out, coil packs cleaned up, and new plugs fitted - still got a smoke screen when started up, but cleared reasonably quickly.

Update - the AGP ones that cost around a fiver have been on the "drivers bank" now for around 16K miles - fitted together with a new set of GM

gaskets (which I had "in stock" and cost me £25 when I bought them) on the "passenger bank".  No leakage to date from either bank - in fact just serviced the

car so checked carefully - and in 16K miles only needed to top up engine oil once (after 15K) with around 1/4 pint!  Engine and drive both dry.

Both gaskets fitted using new GM o-rings and black sealant - niether bank was torqued, just tightened from middle out in stages by feel (experience).  All bolts

checked during recent service for continued tightness & all ok.

HTH

Car has now done approx 25K miles since gasket & o-ring change - no leakage from either bank and all plug wells clean.  No oil added since last oil change 8K milews ago.  Cam cover bolts checked for tightness - none loosened.  25K to date for a £5 gasket, and still going strong.  Seems cost effective to date vs the pricey GM ones.  Will continue to monitor whilst still owned.

Mileage now on 127K miles.

Thinking of selling soon, no mechanical issues, bodywork rust free but scruffy - for an '03 CD Estate, not £3K, nor £2K, more realistically nearer sub £1K - reason for sale will be due to purchase of a newer similar sized Estate.  Will put in "For Sale" section when replacement located and purchased.

General Car Chat / New Car
« on: 09 December 2015, 00:52:05 »
Well youngest daughter recently passed her test and I had to put my hand in my pocket as I promised her a car when she passed (think she must have plied me with drink)

Bought her (her choice) a Citroen C1, low mileage on '13 plate, with just under 12 months Citroen warrany left.  Seems a nice little (little being the operative word) car, extremely well specced for the money.  Took me back when I test drove it - had to think why it had 3 pedals - nice box, didn't need the 3rd pedal once it was moving ;)  Quite nippy too for a 1 litre.

Anyone any experience of these? Seems to be good in terms of reliability - anyone know of potential issues on these?

Omega General Help / Some cam belt myths dispelled
« on: 12 April 2015, 23:17:34 »
Just fitted new cambelt kit to the 2.6 Omega Estate today.  Nearly 45K since last one fitted - thankfully it didn't break at 40,001 miles after last one fitted.  Belt removed looked like new, no signs of any cracking etc.  Also idlers and adjuster still looked good being free running with no sign of grease seepage.
Used a new Gates kit (£35 off ebay - link was posted on OOF and got in quick) - this was kit for older 2.5/3.0 lits with the two adjustable idlers.
Old kit fitted by Vx main dealer as part of the deal when I bought the car - timimg was still spot on! - as checked with locking kit.
Backing plate on "new" kit was EB - and different from one taken off (6B I think), so new idler and adjuster swapped onto original backing plate using original spacer.  Original spacer fitted to other idler.  Belt fitted ok (belt markings were way out so ignored).
All set up ok, and tensioned ok, and lined up ok.  Rotated 2 turns and timing spot on, retensioned as manual, rotated and timing checked spot on again.
Rebuilt and started first time, all quiet.  Total time incl coffee and pee breaks, and finding locking kit in garage - just short of 3.5 hours.
Next job fit new cat back exhaust - £72 ex Poland :y

General Car Chat / Radio Code
« on: 14 October 2014, 22:54:51 »
Couldn't find the radio code for the Jag - emailed Jaguar the Reg No and VIN No and copy of V5 - got email back giving full car delivery spec, including all codes and radio code.  That's what I call service, unlike GM who charge £20 to £50 for a replacement car pass!!

General Car Chat / Jag MOT
« on: 02 October 2014, 23:05:09 »
Having serviced the Jag (usual oil/filter change, all new filters, new plugs etc), went in for MOT today.  Passed ok with 1 advisory - rust on osf lower wishbone bush but no play (think thats due to a recent water leak when spigot on coolant resevoir fractured - a known fault - now fixed), but no emission printout! Told no emissions measured so couldn't do a print out.  They checked their emission gear on another car straight after mine to confirm it was working ok!  I know emissions were extremely low last year but am a tad suprised at zero emissions.
