Omega General Help / Re: Welding
« on: 13 April 2023, 17:32:07 »
tracing water leaks is always a pain. ive spent many times in a boot whilst being hosepiped and sometimes its not where you would think.
but yes finish the repairs and then see .may be sorted.
dont be putoff too much by saying that the youtube guys are way better than you.  they do jt for a living and have all the gear but it certainly helps to give guidance and ideas.its only bent metal after all and its taught me many things, the main being ' dont try to make a repair section out of one piece if you cant.often its easier and neater to make several profiles .
the areas you are now doing are typical omega ones ,rear of sills, inside door shut, inside arch behind plastic cover, inner panel (to seat base !) but as ive said many times ,omegas dont rust anywhere as bad as most 60's-80's cars and never to the point of being unrepairable.

as mentioned (worth checking if you like ) but no communication at all wont register any faults at all further down the line as it cant see them so the idea of just plugging it back into your other car makes more sense. doesnt need to be fitted as such,.if both ecu's work and communicate in the other car then theiroretically you  have the repair piece in front of you . ie possibly something in the wiring or connectors.

and yes you may find that the boot water is from rot behind the bumper, lip seal ,tail lights or sometimes they can rust though the double skinned bit between bottom of rear window and the drain channel.

its quite fun relay isnt it but try watching a youtube channel called       yorkshire car restoration     he makes repairs look very easy but does show a lot of detail .and one thing he does is not to try to make a repair piece all from one bit .but to build them up in stages . after watching a few of his videos i guarantee you will want to remake all of your previous repairs again.its that addictive !

think im sorted. another forum member mentioned spray gun paint filter .never would have thought of that..have ordered one of those and a sheet/piece of fine brass filter mesh too !

the carlton tanks have the swirl bowl built in to the tank base. the pick up and  return pipes all feed from / into it.   external pump ,damper and filter mounted inline.
i may  have found some finemesh sheet which i can wrap around the bobbin unlesssomething better popsup !

113
thanks for reply.
mine is a plastic round bobbin that sits in the swirl pot .the sock would probably be more for carburretted cars where the pick up lays on the bottom.   obviously a big enough sock if i could find one would fit around the plastic !   chreers

hi all.
im looking for the plastic round bobbin prefilter that sits on the end of the fuel pickup pipe .its for a carlton but im sure a similar unit would be found on similar gm cars of the era. possibly senator, manta, monza ,astra maybee ?
just pushes onto the end of the 12mm od pipe.

if yours is the type where the pins insert from the front into the backplate then the mating slotted cap washer that conventional ones use could be welded onto the backplate making the slot new again.
other type (that cannot be reached from behind ) could either be converted to slot or a new floati ng pin fitted from the front into the damaged hole and then a washer welded on to make the area good again.

General Car Chat / Re: End of life no parts anymore

theres always a few breakers about. either on here on on ebay the engines were well used in various cars including saabs
.a second hand  cooler should be fine if the cost of new is putting you off..after all every omega is fitted with one !   in fact every used car  out there is a collection of used parts bolted together !
or as mentioned a replacement could be fabricated (or bypassed)
nothing to make me think the car should be scrapped especially if its a good example otherwise.

after spending 2 full days on these im stumped. ive swopped every chip (bar one) and every capacitor between units. still unit 1 stays distorted.
i had another basic unit that came without the cd changer input so have swapped all the relevant components to make this work the changer and all seems good in that department.so theoretically im up and running but what a nightmare ! i was hoping someone who does ice for a living might have popped along and said something along the lines of ' oh its usually the ######### that causes that  but at least it kept me busy and gave me practise swapping chips !

hi.
yes different almost everything !
fault is on one unit. deck (and tape ) plays fine in other unit.so its in the circuit after the pick up head amp and before the main power amp .changed the head amp and capacitors.
