No one has mentioned the B word for a while
« on: 04 September 2019, 18:35:56 »

So I will. Boris got another kicking this afternoon and I really can't see any way that he can carry his promises from now in. I just hope we are reaching some sort of endgame.

They must be laughing their tits off in Brussels!  ::)

Although the Grauniad complains that Tory peers have tabled a hundred odd amendments to the No Deal Bill in the Lords, in an effort to slow its progress so that it hasn't passed by the time Parliament is prorogued.  :)

We havent heard anything about Boris’s alternative to the Irish backstop that Merkel gave him thirty days to come up with.

Maybe he gave up when Barnier said the backstop was the best offer the EU would entertain.

Just checked the bookies odds that we leave the EU between July-December 2019. 5:4 on that we leave & if Boris frustrates this bill & others until 31/10 we will have left & EU law will no longer override UK law by the automatic repealing of the 1987 Single European Act & the only way to become a member again would be to reapply & have a referendum, where Cameron's law requiring a referendum for a new EU treaty still applies. What could possibly go wrong? ::) ::) ::)

Yes, but it's also 1/3 that we won't leave without a deal.

Apparently he is now talking about an all Ireland agri area, whatever that is.

Seems to me that it's all very well our parliament trying to stop no deal and getting yet another extension past the end of October but who/what says the EU would agree a further extension? They claim to be doing this for the good of the country but in reality they're virtually crippling it with all the uncertainty.A no deal exit wouldn't be the best outcome but at least everyone would then know for certain what they're facing rather than all this leaving/not leaving,deal/no deal

They (The EU) have already said that a General Election or Second Referendum would be grounds for an extension. And they don't want to be seen to effectively boot us out with 'no deal'. If we ask for an extension for a GE or Ref2 I'm 99% certain they will agree. Other than because they're getting annoyed at us there is no real reason for them not to agree.

Huh? Not aware of that. But even if it is correct, any future UK Parliament can repeal "Cameron's law" because Parliament is and always was Sovereign. It just needs a majority of MP's to vote for it's repeal and it's gone.

Some forget that the Government has already signed into law legislation to repeal the Act of Parliament which set in stone Britain’s EU (EEC) membership in 1972. That means we can leave on 31 October.

Also, the Lords are debating over 100 amendments to yesterday's no-deal bill, while the Kinnock amendment (calling for May's WA to be dragged back again) went through without a vote – apparently because the government failed to provide a teller. Funnily enough, though, that amendment hasn't been debated by the Lords, meaning that, following the debate and, even assuming it is passed without amendment, it would then be sent back to the Commons for a vote and Royal Assent. Basically, this ties the Lords up so much that there would be no time for all that before prorogation. Methinks the failure to provide a teller wasn't a mistake.

Also Parliament won't let Boris call an election, so it looks like full-speed ahead.

Good.

Yes the European Union Act 2011 was introduced by the coalition government following Labour's failure to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty which was a 2005 General Election manifesto commitment.  ::)

According to Wiki 'The Act is largely repealed by the European Union Withdrawal Act 2018'

Despite the current remainder triumphalism I have stayed optimistic that Boris will make the default prevail & this free Telegraph article agrees. :y

The purge of the ultra-remain element from the Tory party has been overdue & massively strengthens the party's voting appeal for the 70% of leavers who are natural Tory party voters.

Farage comment today is that a Tory-TBP alliance will be unstoppable where the Tories will keep their traditional seats & TBP will hoover up many Labour ones in the north. :y

This LimpDem fixed 5 year parliaments act has been a disaster & we are exactly at where it was predicted, in the worst case scenario, we would be. :( If Liebour/LimpDems continue to refuse an election they will lose, then we are in for 2.5 years of non-government where the minority can't pass anything & will thought the majority remain rabble. The best we can hope for is that when we leave on the 31st the rabbles alliance unwinds as it is then pointless. Half-baked parliamentary reforms have a habit of biting MPs back. :-[

The Tory party broke electoral law in order to keep him out of the commons. It went to court and they were punished very lightly, actually a woman in central office carried the can but wasn't really punished because her husband was ill.
Despite not sitting in Westminster, he is the most successful politician of his generation. He is single handedly responsible for Brexit.
There is a very good chance his party will win some seats in the upcoming election, and possibly even hold the balance of power as the DUP have done until recently.

Well.......no general election until November, after the extension (which Boris says he will die in a ditch before he asks for it) is guaranteed.

What a bizarre situation.  Labour, the SNP, the LimpDems, Greens et al propping up a minority right wing Tory government.  ::)

So what happens now?

In order to avoid a no deal hard exit, if there is no agreement in place by 30th Oct, the only options will be :

Revoking Article 50

Or

Extending the deadline.

Macron has said he isn't keen on extending the deadline........

Have I read this right? Or is it Boris has to go to the EU before 31st and seek an extension?

He's just posturing as the present situation suits them very well.  They get our money and British officials are either absent, abstaining or just going along with stuff.  ::)

However, it would be funny as .... if he meant it and wielded his veto, so we left with no deal on 31st Oct!  ;D
