Nick, completely agree with what you’ve said except I don’t understand how I’ve made this stupidly complicated?!? I researched the tyres I wanted on oof as I trust your opinions, purchased them online and they arrived. My research led me to ask them specifically what age they’d be. Being happy with their answer I purchased. What I ended up with was, in my opinion, unsatisfactory.

Dg, correct... I’ve not fitted them. I did contemplate it bearing in mind the hassle I may now be in for. But I decided to stick to my guns and not touch them. Plus I’d had a long hard day and the thought of fitting 4 tyres and checking / adjusting the alignment also aided my decision 😂

Nick re using business locally you’re right. Depending on how this pans out I may be using one eg if I got refund / return tyres. But we’ll see.

As you made it clear that you wanted NEW tyres, not tyres over two years old, you have a legitimate complaint.
They put dates on tyres for a reason, and could be an MOT failure if too old, yes?

Under distance selling regs I would have thought that you have a right to return the tyres within 2 weeks regardless of your reason for doing so.

Emailed these guys to confirm if I order their tyres will they be new as opposed to ones made a while ago. Chap said yes, they’re usually same year (that we are in) if not newer.

So my four “new” tyres arrived this morning. 42nd week of 2016.

Yeah they’re an odd size (225/55/16) but surely when you purchase new tyres that is what you should get. Or should I fit them and shut up ?

Tyres are a common consumable part and are available from several suppliers in every small town, who operate a drive in, supply and fit, then drive out service. They get them from the same wholesaler, so prices are very similar. With that in mind, WHY would you involve another unattached layer to supply you, and then have to pay someone else to fit them?


Being supplied a 2 year old part, that deteriorates over time is unsatisfactory even if you wear out tyres at the appalling rates that are commonly mentioned here. You didn't buy them from a local bricks and mortar retailer, so you've complicated the complaints procedure too.


Send them back at Black Tyres expense, and buy them locally from someone who cares about your business.

That is exactly what I was thinking and the point I was trying to make

When I want new tyres fitted I just find the cheapest price for the brand and type I want then phone my local, very reliable, used for 18 years, tyre and exhaust centre and they match the price, fully fitted, etc, etc.

Should it be more complicated than that?

You could have ordered them through your work supplier, and been in control of the whole process including any complaints you might have had.

Well there you have it. You want spanking new tyres of a particular brand for 45p a corner and are then disappointed when they turn out to be NOS...

At least you now know why they weren't the £1 each that they should have been...

No when I say they were too pricey they were like £100 more in total over the four tyres from Northampton Tyres. I assumed (rather naively it seems) that the info given to me would be correct hence the purchase from BC.

In hindsight yes I should have just ordered them from NT but I didn’t realise there’d be this hassle. The fact remains that this shouldn’t be complicated. You ask a specific question. Get wrong info. That’s the problem here imo.
