Wanted: Good condition rear wheel arches (FL)
« on: 21 July 2014, 13:37:42 »

Hi ya,

Tried the sources on-line (including a cool crash repair centre) but cant get them for love nor money.

Wondered if there was anyone breaking a miggy who would cut out the arches for me?

Obviously will pay for the time cutting them out as well as the arches and delivery.

Don't care about colour as i'll be respraying but will need them cut a bit higher in to the panel as the rust has progressed to near the filler cap so can PM with pics of where i need them cut.

Have no idea what this would cost so make me an offer :)

If you're going to do it that way, then you want to cut the repair panel above the bodyline. Then you can make the join in that area, which will prevent a lot of distortion.
But I think that's making things difficult, and you'd be better of letting in a couple of smaller, homemade panels. You'll be applying filler however you do the job, so that won't make much difference.

Any chance of pictures?

Thanks Nick. So, bearing in mind i'm still in ''basic training'' for welding..... are you saying it would be best to make the panels by bending steel and welding it in... then fashioning the shape with the filler?

I cant get pics at the mo as at work but will post up as soon as im home tonight :)

When it comes to cutting out the rust on my arches im thinking of getting flared covers made from fibre glass then cut the rust out and fit theses over the top .. saves a lot of bodywork ..

That is a small, local arch repair.
Don't make things difficult for yourself!

It's better to make the metal repair as good as you can, and just use filler to finish. Sheet metal is fairly cheap, and arches don't use much, so it's worth making as many panels as necessary to do this.

If you only want to do a small section you could try finding a scrap front wing & cut a section from the wheel arch on that & graft it in. :y

You've a lot to learn: rust is ALWAYS worse than it looks, and there is ALWAYS more than you thought!

Couldnt agree more Nick.

The way i see it is this..... the rust is progressing up the quarter panel. but hasnt made it to the filler cap. so surely i can cut away the rot just under the filler cap?

OR

Are we saying that it could have affected most of the panel but be hidden?

Well If you look at the piccy of mine you will see I had the horrors lurking under the bump strip, By the time I had cut out the rot it was about a foot long & 1 1/2 wide :o, I welded in new steel & then a gentle skim of pudding, The annoying thing was i was only removing the strip to get at the little bit of rot on the back of my arch! (which you'll see I included into the welded in plate), But like others have said make sure you get all the rot out, Where I thought i had cut out enough further up i have got bubbles coming up again, So I will try cutting a wheel arch section out of an old front wing i have got to make a panel when I get around to it.
