I spend 50% of my commuting time in 2018 BMW 140i, in 20K it's been faultless, as did the 50k in his 235i before that.

My observations:

- It's a fun car, 3.0 twin turbo petrol, with 340bhp in a 3 door RWD hatch.
- It's fast, sub 5s to 60.
- His is a manual, so more involved, though not as smooth for the passenger!
- A drive that does not spare the horses, will still get 30mpg average it's surprisingly good on fuel.
- It feels a bit cheap, the doors the plastic trim does not have that premium a feel, IMHO.
- The ride is horrific, it is absolutely appalling. I often cannot wait to get out of it, you feel every single bump, every change in road surface.

With the exception of the reliability point (which I obviously can't agree with  ;D) I'd concur on all points.

I had a set of 17"s with winter wheels on, which I never got the chance to try on it, but I wonder if they would have improved the ride.  :-\

It was very evident that all the money went on the engine and drivetrain, rather than the interior. But seeing as you could get one, brand new for under £28k if you knew where to look, it was hardly surprising that there were some rough edges.  :o

What I did find surprising was that the 2 different 3 series I had as courtesy cars while mine was in the shop (one leather one cloth) felt no better inside. Considering the performance variants of those (even excluding the M3) can go well north of 40k, I didn't find the quality of their interiors acceptable.  My current golf's interior is better screwed together, albeit not as fancy to look at.

It's an age and padding thing. I'm guessing that your arse may be less 'well padded' than that of Aaron. :)

Mt Tata rides pretty well considering it sits on 20 inch wheels.

I never thought of whitewalled tyres....  :-\   It would have given it an extra dimension!  ;D

I normally opt for the 430d M Sport Plus so I get the 19" wheels and the blue calipers as standard but, I did once have a standard 430d M Sport, which had the 18" wheels on. It was instantly noticeable that the ride was more cushioned with the higher profile tyres on, but me being me I went back to the 19's as they look nicer.  ::)

At 180k miles, both shocks and springs are overdue replacement.But the thing that we've allowed modern suspension designers to forget is that soft doesn't mean uncontrolled. Try an older Jag for this; they have long travel, soft(ish) springs and dampers that are perfectly matched. That gives predictable handling and a comfortable ride that combined allow plenty of feel. They're not encumbered by overwide stupidly hard tyres either, which lack a progressive feel and do the ride no favours

Exactly. The designers allow the car to roll as well, but it's  well controlled.

And you're a lunatic reformed driver....

The 4 series low centre of gravity and responsiveness to steering input is like a go-kart. It holds its line abnormally well, so when you press on around a roundabout it doesn't understeer like the Omega and feels like it's glued to the road. You aim and it will go, or so I've been told.  :)

But, I agree, it doesn't like speed humps or pot holes. When you hit a large pot hole it feels like the wheel must have shattered and it's at times like this that you notice the harshness of the ride.

I managed to dial that out of my MV6 and make it very pointy, which is probably one of the (many) reasons I loved that car.  But it did leave me driving it far too quickly *ALL* the time  :-[

I honestly haven't read a good word yet about the exterior design of the new 1 series, apart from owners of 140i's as it has just made their car more desirable.  ;D  It's like the designer is deliberately trying to morph it in to a Kia/Hyundai style vehicle.
Also, what the hell are they doing with the model numbers, the 330ie is a 2.0 4 pot, the 530e is a 2.0 4 pot with additional electric motors and they appear to have dropped their best petrol engine, the straight six. >:(
At the moment they still do the far superior straight six diesel, but if they stick that hideous grill on the other models they will be driving more people away.  :(
