Omega hit by truck - what triggered the alarm
« on: 03 January 2019, 11:19:43 »

One of my Omegas was hit by a truck yesterday. Driver of course ran away. Know the identity of truck and driver so hopefully the company will tale responibility for the damage today. Omega was parked and was hit in the rear by what i believe is the trucks rear end swinging out when turning. Omega is a 97 estate. Trucks rear steel bumper ripped a big hole in the omegas plastic bumper. Also hit the Omegas trailer hitch and dragged it 40 cm sideways. The Edge of the»box» on the truck went through the Omegas tailgate window wich shattered in a thousand pieces. Tailgate itself seems pratically undamaged.
Omega alarm was screaming and flashing. But started thinking, what exactly set it of. Glass break sensors on the rear side windows only cover their respective window i assume? Also didnt think the omega alarm would react to the car moving sideways? Tailgate structure itself is intact and remained close. My assumption is the interior Motion detectors triggered the alarm when they reacted to pieces of the tailgate glass started flyging around in there. Or is it any other feature on the alarm that could have reacted?

I think the alarm ECU contains shock sensors, so likely these triggered it?

Don't think they have tilt sensors, but the pressure wave from the rear window going would certainly do it ;)

Either way, at least the alarm works...

Yep. Alarm worked like a champ. Transport company has now accepted responsibility for the damages. Although the baltic driver ran away and denied noticing anything his boss took it seriously and found green glass bits all over his taillight when he reached their headquarters:p

Be sure to check the towbar/boot floor carefully... not really designed for sudden sideways loads :-\

Thanks for the advice. Have thought about it and cant see any structural damage in the floor. But i assume that the car will be going to a garage that records the damage cost for the trucks insurance company. Hopefully they will be thorough. Anyway i also assume that the damage will be greater than the value of the car. So my goal now is basically to get a cash settlement and a deal that i keep the «wreck».

Also car was standing on snow. So hopefully it slid sideways quite easily.

Anybody know how the interior motion sensors on top of the B pillars work? Reason i ask is that before the car was hit the alarm worked fine. Running man button would show a steady red light until the alarm was armed and it started its slow flashing. After the impact however upon setting the alarm the running man will flash rapidly until its armed and flashes slowly. As i understand this indicates a fault with the alarm. Do the missing rear window in itself affect the alarm in any way?

Possibly... Look for contacts similar to the side windows  ;)

Just read in vauxhall workshop manuals online, and it seems the heated rear screen is a part of the alarm system. That would then probably be what set it of and why it wont fully arm now.

Ahh, yes, I have a vague recollection that the heated screen is connected to the alarm on an estate.
