Ruddy tyres
« on: 14 September 2019, 18:00:11 »

I was sort of pleased when our car had not got a spare wheel. We used the space to good effect on our UK trips.

However when we got the car, I changed the front tyres as they were a bit cracked and were getting on a bit. Then we had a puncture in one of the fronts. The hole was big enough to put a finger in it. No puncture glue and electric pump kit could fix that. No problem. All car insurance here includes compulsary recovery ( including from home).

So new tyre. So much for Industry 93000 miles between punctures.

Today tyre pressure loss flashed on screen . Used the electric pump to good effect to re inflate. Went to local garage and predictably couldn't be repaired. Strange damage. Something had entered he edge of the tyre on the curved bit at an angle but not right the way through. So non repairable.

New tyre needed so had to have two as they are hot on the MOT here on different makes on same axle. Saturday so couldn't get matching Pirelli P zero as closing at 1.00pm

The guy was a bit put out when I said “ Are I they good tyres”? His response “Michelin, they are the best”. So now have Pilot sports .Bit disappointed as I always have all four same make. Hey Ho!

Only good news is , I kept the good tyre. My plan is to find a scrap yard and get a jack, tool kit and a spare full size alloy OR possibly a spacesaver and kit.

Anyone have experience of spacesavers or what to look for when buying S/H ?. The spare wheel well is big enough for a full size spare. Car is Mk7 Golf.

I usually buy a spare alloy to match the rest ,off ebay if alloys are fitted
saves driving round with that odd steel for weeks till you get round to a new tyre
UK MOT you can't have a space saver fitted to an axle for test ,tyre size must match across the axle
on cars with steelies . I get a full size steel spare
getting a collection of new space savers though  ;D but they can go on a car that gets retired from the fleet (scrapped)

The tyre you have kept will be no good if you buy a space saver.

What pisses me right off is that a spare wheel and tyre are often seen as an optional extra these days..... :-\

My Omega (3) all came with a proper spare but on the Tata it was a £150 extra. :-\

Quite. Might be hard to get a full size alloy especially one that matches.

My 2.6 saloon came with a spacesaver wheel, but I didn't like the speed/distance restrictions, so I fitted a proper one in its place - just! The carpeted cover is safely in my garage! :)

but the smaller space saver is only intended to get you going again until you can get your tyre repaired or replaced. I can't see my full sized Merc wheels fitting in the spare wheel well.  ;) ;)

The Indians saw fit to put different sizes on my Brummie barge, so space saver it is.  Not idea if its standard or optional though.

Ah, tyres.. the Range Rover went in for its MOT last week and they kindly informed me that the reason both offside tyres have slow leaks is that they both have nails in them (somewhere, buggered if I could see them, though!) - only one is repairable.

Being full-time 4x4, of course .. I can't just go changing one ;D

Might have to wait until my bank account recovers from the alternator and door lock that needed doing for the MOT, though ;D

Of course, I have no spare .. because (looking at the MOT history) someone (probably) stole it by cutting through the winch cable back in 2015...

... and if you go to Costco they'll only consider replacing all four due to being full-time 4x4

Sensible on their part, though  :y

I'm thinking of a set of General Grabber AT3s - they come recommended on the RRS forum, and are reasonably priced. Of course, being 275/40R20 (or 275/45R20 for a slightly softer ride) that's still a healthy £163 a corner.

That's not a bad price (for other people, not me :)) for a tyre of that size.

You're right - it is a lot cheaper than some of the "mainstream" alternatives :y less than I paid for a set of tyres for the BMW, too.

But Jaime will tell you that they're shite and, if you try to take a sharp bend at 70mph in the snow, they'll let go.  ;D

Not driven a RRS, but I know the quicker FFRRs I've nicked off our resident used car seller do indeed have a chronic understeer issue when hard on the brakes for a bend.  Just don't tell joshwyatt :P
