1996 3L Elite Estate fitted with an LSD and Xenon conversion.  Everything works except sunroof and self leveling suspension ( non-self levelling shocks and springs fitted before I got the car).
There was an oscillation problem (shaking side to side) see recent discussion, that has been cured at least temporarily by fitting different front tyres, but the front wishbones may need changing in future.
The car was loaned to my neighbour for a couple of weeks while he sorted out his transport arrangements, in order for him to insure it ownership was transfered to him and it is still registered to him.  Any prospective buyer will be introduced to him.  He taxed it (until Oct 2013) and would like a refund on the tax on top of the sale price which is £400.  Mileage is about 138k, it has been maintained by me and I have my computerised service records.  Pictures can be provided on request.

Omega General Help / Wishbones & Alignment
« on: 24 April 2013, 06:46:16 »
Looks like I will be leaving this excellent forum, but more on that in a separate post.  I have loaned my Omega Estate to a neighbour who has found that he likes it so much that he wants to buy it.  Regular readers will remember that the car is suffering from shaking or oscillating at the front and the collective wisdom was that it was the front bushes on the front wishbones worn out.  My prospective new owner wants to sort this out and has sourced new wishbones from Poland at a very attractive price.  At first I was suspicious of the quality, but then I learned that they are Lemforder items which should be fine.
The bit that concerns me is that he is suggesting he gets the local garage to fit the wishbones, they have quoted £35 to replace both arms and £12 for tracking if needed.  I cannot see how they can do a proper job for this cost.  What does the forum think?

Omega General Help / Car Oscillating
« on: 05 March 2013, 07:40:44 »
I have a problem.  At between 20mph and 40mph the car oscillates from side to side, it feels like an oval wheel or a bent wheel, but I've checked all the wheels/tyres and they are round and true.  It feels just as though somebody is rocking the car from side to side, its a gentle rocking, not harsh, but of quite large magnitude.  I can feel it mildly through the steering wheel but mainly it rocks me sitting in my seat.  Above 40 it disappears, braking is fine with no pulling or vibration and the symptom gets less the longer the journey.  I've had the car up in the air and can feel no looseness in any of the wheels or suspension components, tyres are round and true with no bulges, rear tyres are fairly new and wearing flat, the fronts are near the end of their life but still well legal although they are slightly more worn on both edges than the middle, but not excessively so.
Its got me beat, any suggestions as to what I've missed?

My battery keeps going flat after a couple of days.  I'm fairly sure it is the interior light delay relay having eliminated everything else.  Where is the delay relay on a pre-facelift 3L Elite so I can remove it and see if that cures the problem.  It doesn't seem to be with the under bonnet relays or the ones above the drivers feet.  If it turns out to be that, does anyone have one for sale?
Thanks
Alan

This is one for the travelling mechanics in the Buxton, Leek, Ashbourne area.  Perhaps a slightly unusual request in that it does not relate to an Omega.  Instead its a Porsche 924.  These are sturdy simple cars and my thought is that if somebody has the ability to cope with all the Omega's foibles then a simple 924 should be child's play.  So do we have any takers.

A bit of background.  The car belongs to my brother Jon.  He has owned it for 6 years and I owned it for 10 years before that.  I did ALL my own work on the car and would have continued to do so in Jon's ownership except that he is a 500 mile round trip from me.  Jon has no mechanical aptitude at all and relies on garages for absolutely everything.  The car was in excellent body and mechanical condition when passed to Jon and it is still in excellent body condition, but mechanically he has been badly let down by those garages that have worked on it.

The car is currently with me in Devon for me to sort out some of its problems but it will be going back to Longnor in the Peak district shortly.  The unresolved problem is very high oil consumption in the region of 60 miles to the pint, the back of the car gets soaked in oil very quickly.  Compressions are even across the cylinders and excellent and there is virtually no emissions from the crankcase ventilation system which is not blocked and has been modified to exit to atmosphere thus pointing to a problem with oil control rings rather than compression rings.  Having said that, probably the best course of action is to fit a good second hand engine.

I am now 70 and do not want to get involved in changing engines, so I'm hoping there is somebody who can help Jon out?  I am very familiar with the car and would be available on the end of the phone with advise and encouragement.

Any takers

Alan

Omega General Help / LSD - Type & Adjustment
« on: 03 September 2009, 22:49:01 »
Hi
I've just fitted a used LSD purchased from ebay some time ago.  Its LSD function does not work although I'm fairly sure it is an LSD because when I had the back cover off before fitting it I could see some small compression springs in there.  Like an idiot I forgot to take any pictures. I'm assuming this is an optional Vauxhall LSD and not an after-market type, in which case what type of LSD is it.  The springs I saw suggest that it is a plate type diff, is this right.  Is there any means of adjusting the LSD function because as said mine does not work.  Parked with one wheel on the grass verge and the other on tarmac and then booted with the traction control off it produces a rooster tail of mud from one wheel and very little forward motion.  Very disappointing after all the effort of fitting it.

Any help and advise especially on ways to adjust it will be very welcome.

Thanks
Alan

Hi
I need a headlight washer pump for a 1996 Elite.  The shaft seal between the pump & motor has sprung a leak on mine and I cannot see any way of opening up the pump to fix it.  So does anybody have a useable one for sale please.  Old one has Pt Nos 90 127 502
058 APE 12v
0392 003 452

Thanks
Alan
