Little bit of a hole......
« on: 07 May 2020, 10:03:36 »

Came across this the other day, bubbling under the paintwork, so this morning thought i would have a wee chip away at it thinking it might be an easy refill and repair within my realms of doable ::)......, well little bit turned out to identify bigger underlying issue, so think will speak to the guys round the corner would P40 do this and a bit of mesh?....I personally think a bit of welding a section on?, side skirt will also need to come off, and the rubber lower door seal on the body work does not appear to just come off easy, must be stuck with something, don't want to pull too hard on it....

Fixed.

As above, the rubber strip does indeed pop off. Wheel arch liner off will help to give a clearer picture before getting too involved.

Two points though:

1. A half arsed filler repair will make the actual repair twice as involved.

2. Drop Nick W a bell re patching it. He's in Medway Towns, so not a million miles from Costa Del Peckham, and really knows his onions :y

Cheers, my thoughts also, need to be a proper job done, not half arsed, will drop Nick W a message and see what transpires :y

That's very likely  :-\

It's also within close proximity to the rear seat belt anchor points, so no amount of filler is going to make it safe. Cut out and new steel welding in is a minimum requirement, but it would be wise to see what the rest of it looks like after you've removed sill covers and liners.

I've seen your PM, but will answer here.

Your picture is just the symptom of a MUCH bigger hole that covers several different panels, all of which are MOT structural failures due to their location.

Before going any further, you need to remove the sill cover, end cap, plastic endcover inside the wheelarch and the seatcushion. Have a gentle poke about with a small screwdriver in those areas, and along the sill. Have a good cry, and report back.

I would also suggest poking about where the rear bumper covers the quarter panel.

It's fixable, but with exception of the sill(I prefer to replace the whole panel rather than several patches) a lot of fiddly work. To give some idea of the size of the job, I scrapped my car instead of doing the second side.

Looks very similar to what I had a couple of years back ... cost to fix was £400 a side ... new sills and some serious welding around the seatbelt anchorage points, plus a bit of cosmetic welding elsewhere, followed by a bit of respraying .....

What the Irmscher side skirts was hiding was frightening when I was shown !!!

Andy Clears has just been doing similar repairs on my project car. The rear arm and seatbelt mounting points were OK on mine but that section of rear wing and the outer arch lip area have been replaced. You can buy the repair panels from Carz2. I suggest you take a good look at the front chassis rail / engine mount reinforcing bracket location (ie look with a screwdriver) as well as the items listed above before going in for any welding.

The quarter panel has already had work done, on the wheel arch section a couple of weeks ago but at that point i really never noticed that bit, until earlier this week. I don't really care what it costs to fix, I just want it done right.  :y...Oh and it won't be me doing it, beyond my capabilities ;D

Well I checked under the rear seat and everything is fine, showed to the repair guy in the garage round the corner so dropping it in Tuesday morning to have repair done, will be wanting to see extent once they take off side skirt, and wheel arch cover. Have no choice have to get it done next week as MOT is due the following week, will keep you all posted on developments :y

Yeah good point, have ordered a rear quarter panel, and subject to what find on tuesday, can get a side sill if required. So if need to order another bit then it will wait until part arrives, so investigate fully first. Gonna see/try to take the irmscher side skirt off today see what' lurking underneath, might have a go at the wheel arch cover, but think that's a wheel off job?, if it is will leave until tuesday, would just like to see whether the sill is fubared and needs replaced.

Really need to check everything on both sides Mike. There may be nothing visible on the other side at the moment, but it could still be as bad or worse under the plastic bits.

going to have a proper look on Tuesday when get it up on the ramps, and take the bits off, have order quarter panel, as part donor, can get the side sills if required, so Tuesday will be cursory look to find full extent of issue and whether nay other issues lurking that are not currently visible :y, thankfully the garage is just two minutes from my door :) :y :y

As regards the MOT well looks like I have until 22 November now, so no rush to fix, but still needs to be done as soon as can be. :y

Well good news not as bad as it could have been, getting the work done now, have the car back late tomorrow afternoon, checked all other areas underneath and all fine :y, apart from oil leak coming from somewhere, that's the next problem to sort out :-X..total damage £270...oh and that includes fitting the rear track arms and doing the tracking, happy days :y

They didn't even undo the nuts.

That's to say, the numbers are unchanged from the 'before' list so clearly they're talking Bollix, not you ;)

rubbish. There's easily 6° of adjustment just by loosening the strut to hub nuts and prying on the wheel.

Those figures of 1°28 will wear the inner tyre edges and make the steering really nervous. It should be more like 1°10.
