Got my bottom handed to me today
« on: 26 April 2016, 20:15:43 »

Nearside rear ARB link on a 1.8 Honda Civic of 2001 vintage.

Was an mot repair and service. Did the service and life was good. An arb link should be straight forward. The top link was easiest access. Couldnt get a gun in. Tried to just spin nut off first. Whole thing spinning which i excpected. Couldn't get any grips on the ball joint cos of access initially. Eventually did and it didn't make a big of difference lol

Next tried the Allen key. I stripped that. Lol

Decided to cut it off. Couldn't get the right angle. Then compressor died. Eventually cut through it but had left a bit too much on the ball joint side and ended up hammering it with a punch in to a point to go through the roll bar.

Then I had the awkward end to do  :'(

All in all it took me about an hour and half just to get the o!d one out.

Moral of the story. The simplest of tasks can turn in to nightmares lol

Won in the end though  ::)

Well done, Webby. I do enjoy your tales of challenging car repairs, keep them coming. There are lots of tricks to be learned, and best approaches to be imagined.

Lol cheers for the support lads. Glad u like the stories lol

The thing I fear most is the sparks from the cut off wheel. Especially if there's a bit of penetrating oil I forgot to wipe away.

Normally these jobs go ok. But you get the odd one that's just plain shit haha

Cheers

I've had an aphithiny. Is that even the right spelling lol

Aaaaaaanyhow.. IF in future the Allen head in the drop link ball joint isn't destroyed and I'm able to get my Allen socket in all the way snug and secure....

Is it then possible to hold the nut with a long spanner and blast the Allen with an impact instead of this situation where I blast the nut and expect it to spin, the. have to get grips on the ball joint etc

Your thoughts

Try it, with a stopwatch. We'll be interested to know just how few seconds it takes to strip the internal hex.

Sigh......why couldn't you have just said "Great idea, Webby, that's what I would do".  :(

It won't do the allen socket any good either, but I was saving that for another post 8)

And going back to the original post: epiphany - a sudden or great realisation

Very true mate. Might be worth it on tightening up a new one if it decides to spin. Though 9 times out of 10 they tighten with no issues

Going back to your post title - where the hell did that expression come from? I've never heard it before and I began to read all sorts of things into it before I opened your post!   :-X

Lol I'm assuming its Yankee. I suppose if someone handed you your own arse you'd be in a bit of a bad way on the floor.........or in stemos dungeon with a rubber ball in your mouth. Though you'd have to PM him for specifics  ;D
