Headlights
« on: 27 November 2019, 16:45:51 »

Hi all,I just noticed one of my sidelights not working as the MOT's due soon so time to get it done.Firstly should I get bulbs online because I don't know if anyone will stock them locally of is it a common bulb? Secondly what a challenge to get them out which I did just about but I moved the arm adjuster I guess to gain access and aren't sure which position they should be in when i finish? Thirdly driver's headlight silver part seems awfully loose is that normal as just seemed to be floating and made it difficult to get bulb out as everything was moving in the direction pulled? Many thanks as always!!!!

Bulbs, very common, and factors will stock.

Sounds like you've trashed the adjusters though :(   (not necessarily through your doing the bulbs)

probably as the headlights beam will be pointing to the floor

You used to be able to buy a modified adjuster but no idea if it's still available  :-\

Would it be better to just replace the headlight or would there still be broken parts that need to be swapped over?

The adjuster is a poorly designed part made of hardplastic, so secondhand headlights are unlikely to be any better for very long. New ones have a very similar part, but aren't cheap and the quality may not be what you expect.

Fitting new, solid adjusters is a cheaper and permanent fix, which takes about 30minutes per lamp if you take your time and polish the lens.

It's good to know that they're available again, as the aluminium parts mentioned in the guide were high quality and good value. Is there a link to them

Got a feeling Nick did a bunch of spare headlights for me a couple of years back, I think we had a mix of aliminium and silicone adjusters as the ali ones had gone in to short supply. The silicone ones are still available on ebay iirc.

four years Ken :o

The CNC machined aluminium ones are excellent, but you bought the last of them

The others are cast resin, and appear to be made in a mould taken from an original. The finish isn't great and they benefit from minor fettling with a needle file. They have an inserted steel(stainless?) ball that the reflector hangs off. That can come loose, especially if wound in too tight. They're still a better bet than used lamps

Found the resin ones to be poor and requiring work to rectify, these ones work fine and would probably last the life of most Omegas now.
