Million uninsured drivers Swintons
« on: 16 January 2019, 09:04:38 »

Just watched a Swintons tv ad which claims

“ with a million uninsured drivers in the UK”

How do they know? Is it accurate?  I thought ANPR sent out automatically letters to vehicle owner if no insurance.?  At a guess 40 million people in uk with a driving licence so one in 40 uninsured!

I went to a lecture by the ANPR manager for a local police force some years back. He said that they had to turn off reporting of untaxed / uninsured cars because the volume of "hits" risked bringing their system down. :o

They are more interested in solving serious crime and anti-terrorism.

Of course, the roadside ANPRs might pull you over if you're unlucky, but my understanding is that they can't prosecute by post after the fact (unlike for speeding).  ::)

Just because the car/registered keeper is insured it doesn't mean the driver is.

Exactly :y

Unless the police stop the person driving a motor vehicle and find they, personally, are not insured to drive then no offence can be proved. In short a driver can only be prosecuted as "uninsured" when they are found to be actually driving a motor vehicle. ;)

So do we believe the Swintons insurance company claim of one million?

I think they're probably being optimistic about that number - I'd bet that it's far higher.

I expect they're extrapolating from their own statistics on claims against uninsured third parties, though, so they stand a chance of being reasonably accurate.

Add to this the number of cars without MOT
drivers without a licence,
drivers with a licence who don't deserve one due to their inability ,
cars with serious faults that the driver is blissfully unaware of
the shyte state of our road network
drink and drug drivers (or indeed pedestrians)
adverse weather (like a light sprinkle of snow ) ;D

and bus company managers that you have to chase for new wing mirrors  >:( :-X

not a great place to drive anymore  ::)

Probably based on the number of people they repeatedly spam every year ::)

There's a certain city in West Yorkshire where, it is reckoned, that around 1 in 5 are uninsured.  :-X

How many variations of Muhammed are there? 10?, add in Smith, Jones, Collins and Murphy, 15 is probably an accurate guesstimate  ::)
