Omega General Help / Rear bumper removal
« on: 19 September 2007, 19:39:11 »
Done a deal with the bosy shop that I'll drop the rear bumper off to keep the cost down when they fix the dent that the present other half put in the car last weekend.

Any tips on how to do it; I presume it is not too tough to do?  I could consult the Haynes book but that probably going to be as much use as it usually is....

Omega General Help / Dent repair
« on: 15 September 2007, 18:55:03 »
The present squeeze has just managed to reverse the meega into a concrete gatepost, result is a 9 inch long gouge in the rear quarter panel above the bumper.  The paint has been broken but luckily the dent is accessible from the inside as it backs on to the spare wheel which I guess means that it can be knocked out.  I have two questions

1. are the franchise 'dent repair' or 'chip away' guys any good for this type of thing  (I know it is a bit difficult to tell without seeing the injury but I have not got my camera at the moment).  They've got to be capable of paint respray for my job

2. does anyone have any recommendations for a bodyshop/ dent repair specialist in the Coventry/Birmingham area  (or further afield if they are good!)

Now off to hit the Adnams Explorer:  won't make the dent go away but will improve my mood....

Omega General Help / no vacuum at HBV
« on: 26 August 2007, 09:33:29 »
I've been trying to pin down my weak aircon problem which has led me to look at the HBV

The car has aircon but NOT Climate control.  Here are the symptoms:

When air direction is on screen or feet vents and turn  to cold the vents blow hot for about 30 seconds then lukewarm, never cold.  If I select face vents - I get an icy blast.

I get similar with the aircon off, air is just that bit warmer.

o.k. so I thought the HBV has failed but before I condem it I thought I'd check the vac feed to it.

So here's what I did:

both heater controls to hot: no aircon
both to cold no aircon

repeat as above with aircon on

In each of the four cases there is absolutely no vac at the HBV.  So then I thought, o.k. a vac line has dropped off/split etc: try blowing down it - result, the pipe appears blocked.

In addition to this my aux water pump (under coolant bottle) always runs - not sure if it should or is related.

I know that taking the heater controls out and the air dist unit can be an akward job so is there something else I should check before I go digging?

Omega General Help / has my HBV failed?
« on: 09 June 2007, 10:20:40 »
I'm not getting any coolant loss but.....

Generally get slightly warm air through the vent even when temperature is set to cold.  Aircon fitted but not climate.  When I use aircon it is cold but not freezing as you would expect

I've checked the two pipes that come through the bulkhead to the heater matrix - these are very hot even with the temperature controls set to cold throughout since starting up

I ask because I'm having a new windscreen fitted and I can swap the hbv when the scuttle is off

Opinions?

Omega General Help / Are my wishbone bushes shot?
« on: 10 April 2007, 18:04:42 »
Below are a couple of pictures of the inner bush.  i can't make out if I have a problem or not so an expert opinion would be appreciated

and

The wishbones are original from 1999 but only done 50k miles.

I don't seem to have a problem with tyre wear but as I messed up the camber with the change of the front shocks I don't want to pay for a professional geometry job if the wishbones are gone

Omega General Help / cruise upgrade problem
« on: 21 January 2007, 15:13:00 »
I'm in the process of adding cruise to an october 99 2.5 manual reflection - pre facelift.  The actuator and cruise stalk are in.  I've bridged out the socket for the clutch switch and checked that I have the 4 way brake switch fitted (with 4 cables).  The problem is the unit does not work!

On checking the cruise multiplug I get:

Pin    colour

A      black blue  :  no response to earth or 12v+
B      black yellow : +12v in response to button I
C      black brown : +12v in response to button R
D      black brown   : +12v
E       black  : +12v

I seem to get no response to pressing the brake switch at any of the pins including pin D although bridging out the clutch switch gave me 12v+ on D

I also do not get any response to pressing button O

The colours above do not match the Haynes diagram which is also a bit confusing.

Before fitting I did test the cruise stalk to make sure it responsed to all buttons.  It did.

So I think I have two problems

1 no response to brake switch:  but if it was not connected I would not get 12v+ at pin D so I do not think this is the reason why it does not work

2 No response to button O via pin A.  I suspect this is the reason why it does not work

Does anyone have any clues here or pin readings that may help?

Omega General Help / cruise control - pre facelift
« on: 29 November 2006, 19:59:48 »
I understand enabling cruise on the DBW facelift is pretty easy but what about the pre-facelift.  I've got a 2.5 manual so I guess I need

cruise stalk
actuator + mounting brackets
clutch and brake switch (or just clutch?)

Am I correct in guessing that the wiring is in place so it is a case of digging out the connectors from the loom?  Are they easy to find?

Omega General Help / replacement exhaust
« on: 09 September 2006, 18:03:49 »
Hi guys.  The exhaust on my 2.5ltr has finally given up and I'm trying to decide between the VX dealer (over £300 for the three parts) or a Walker replacement at £170.

What is you experience - I've had aftermarket exhausts before on another car ( Bosal) and they were really awful and I don't want to make the same mistake again.

Any thoughts you guys have would be much appreciated as I seem to be running out of luck at the moment (new discs pads, shocks and rear springs in the last two weeks!)

General Car Chat / aircon re-gas in the west midlands
« on: 17 April 2010, 17:35:33 »
I'm looking to get my aircon re-gasses as it is hardly effective (after 11 years).  Is anyone recommended in the west mids?  Near coventry would be even better

General Car Chat / Need help interpreting live data & fault codes
« on: 16 January 2010, 12:45:52 »
ok  so here's the story so far

toyota avensis 4 cly petrol:  running rough: sounds like it is running rich.

so stored codes are P0172 and P0175 - Bank1 % 2 running rich.  plus misfire codes

so I reset the fault lights....

On restart and after warm up I get

Temp sensor 87dec after about 20 minutes of running

the MAf was giving live data

the fuel trim on bank 1 & 2 is showing 36% and lean

Fuel system status is showing " open loop control - warmup"

I also remember I was getting live data from the O2 sensors around 0.02 and 0.03v

and "ignition timing advance cyl 1 is 25 deg" with "advance shown"

Now I've got to the limit of my knowledge - can anyone on here help me!!!  where do I look next?

I think the ECu is trying to over fuel but don't know why.

any thoughts would be most appreciated

General Car Chat / toyota avensis odd brake problem
« on: 14 November 2009, 12:53:36 »
I'm not sure if I've raised this problem before or not.  Anyway, here goes.

THe problem relates to a toyota avensis 1.8 auto.  After braking at very slow speeds, there is intermittently the sound of a large spring being released. This is coupled with 'feeling' it through the brake pedal.  There is nothing obvious here like a trapped brake pedal return spring: and it is too solid a spring noise for that.  I'm at a loss!   any ideas very welcome

....as i need to shift a double bed and some other crap this weekend.  I would hire one but I can't get there when they are open (gotta work friday and saturday am)

General Discussion Area / veccy B MAF problem
« on: 08 May 2009, 20:19:52 »
well i think it is.   Its a 10 year old veccy b (X18XE), stalling at low revs.  Just done a paperclip test and it shows 0100 MAF sensor.

Before I throw some money at it (i.e new MAF)  does anyone know if there is something else that is likely to be causing this other than the MAF itself?  I must say I don't know lots 'bout the veccy

thanks in advance all!

Bit of a begging post really.  I need to replace my rear springs so need to get my hands on a set of axle stands at the weekend.

Is there anyone near the airport (Birmingham) who could lend me a pair?

TIA
