Given there was no-one else in the car, and there is no reason known for the car to leave the road at speed and hit a lone tree....
I wonder if it really was an "accident" ......

Interesting point .... admittedly one I agree with ... however many folks say it takes incredible guts to deliberately kill yourself, especially by driving a car at speed towards a stationery object that you are looking at ...... the chances of not dying and being seriously injured being only one of the possible outcomes.. :(

It would only require a fleeting moment of 'courage' and action to make it happen beyond a point where any change of heart would be too late.

My understanding is that MEN are more successful at suicide.
In 2009 I was having a particularly bad time at work, and being bullied by my manager, who it was clear to everyone, was attempting to manage me out. My self worth was at rock bottom, and I had just been invited to a performance review involving HR. On the way home on the M58 I looked at all the bridges, and wondered if that held a solution to my troubles.
"Luckily" a couple of years before, a neighbour about my age, got up one morning and went to work but never arrived instead taking his own life using a rope. I say luckily, well no, a real proper shit storm for his wife and 4 kids and horrific for the farmer who found him. But yes, luckily for me, because I'll never forget how much sadness and anger it caused. His wife kept asking "why didn't he just resign if he hated it that much"
I honestly don't think suicide have anything to do with bravery or cowardice, but lots to do with mental illness, causing your judgement to be affected.
So Luckily I decided to fight my corner, and with a union rep and a very heated meeting ended up with a more pleasant work environment.

Men are more successful at bottling things up and not sharing with close friends and family.

It might be that he succame to a medical episode... Moot point though as the net result remains unchanged.
Probably too late for his victims though.
As to whether suicide itself is an act of courage or not... It isn't. It can only be either a selfish display of cowardice born of fear or a perverse sense of self preservation; or a selfless act born from love or mercy... which depends entirely on the motivation of the act and its execution (pun most definitely not intended).
Either way, it is generally a calculated process rather than a cry for help gone wrong... After all, why cry out unless you want someone to help you...
