Gearbox issues
« on: 02 June 2018, 07:21:01 »

Car is a 197K 3.2 MV6 Auto

Now Yesterday whilst on the M6 in traffic jam / through 50 mph road works In realised 2 things.
Ambiant temperature was 23 deg C

1 )  Firstly it wouldn't pull away very quickly, almost like I had the brakes on if it wasn't an auto, I'd say the clutch was slipping.

2 ) Then It wouldn't allow cruise control to be selected.

3 ) Then I tried the sport button, and that didn't work.

So when stationary, I turned it off and restarted and it was fine.

But after a few miles faults 1 and 3 came back. Cruise continued to work though.

Turning off and restarting fixed it for a while.

Anyone know anything about the GM autobox attached to the 3.2 omega ?

There is a smell of burning oil which is dripping onto the left hand exhaust (not large amounts particularly - not enough to fail the new MOT)

I have assumed the oil leak is engine oil, but............

So check where the leak is coming from ,engine or box  :y
low trans fluid will upset the gremlins which reside inside the magic box of tricks that is the automatic gear box  :P
requires dexron 3 atf , a bad leak would be a pain if you had to top up often
there's a guide on checking the level  :y

Did you have an "Automatic Gearbox" warning on the MID/GID/CID?

Following my BMW experience, quite possibly a speed sensor/abs* wiring fault.

*not the traditional failure modes.

Box will be stuck in third. I would also wager that it won't change gear manually. Drive it any distance and you'll need a new box regardless.

^^^ Definitely the first IA (Immediate Action) in this case, especially at that mileage which according to OOF means it should be on its third lot of ATF. :y

Definately NOT currently stuck in Third.  It might have been when It was rather around on Friday though.  I did drive it to Wolverhampton (95 miles) today and tomorrow it goes on the ramps.  But this mornings journey was a Very pleasant 1.5 hours to do 95 miles. and An achievement of 34 mpg. (I sit at 70 mph or 50 mph with cruise on, doing my knitting and listening to Farming Today on R4)

Remind me what the Gearbox takes again. Dextrose 3 is it ?

Sounds like an intermittent issue in the auto gearbox or ABS systems, as said, as both can cause the gearbox to go into limp home.

You need to get the codes read, really, to find out exactly what is the problem.

First job is to check / top up the auto transmission fluid, though.

So last night I got the beast onto a 2 poster ramp, and added 1/2 tea cup of Halfords Finest* red Liqueur.  I'm hoping* that tomorrow bring lots of sunshine, such that I'm swelting in stop start traffic on the way back north on the M6 like last week, so I can see if it's a problem.

I think the small oil leak I have is coming from the crank position sensor.  IIRC the seal is tiny on that.  Is there a part number / source ?

Remember the gearbox level needs to be checked / topped up hot with the engine running. :y
