Anyone for a fly-past?
« on: 09 July 2018, 11:49:53 »

If you're in the London area tomorrow (1:00 PM 10 July) then the RAF are having a centenary flypast over Buckingham Palace (assuming their navigational skills allow them to find it  ;D).

100 aircraft will form up over East Anglia, then fly in past Ipswich, Colchester, over London, and disperse to the west. Heathrow is going to 'pause' for up to 15 minutes to allow some of the formations to pass overhead. If you can read Aeronautical-ese, details are here :

https://static1.squarespace.com/static/593e87342e69cf4a3e148bb4/t/5b365c78f950b77e28c3a55d/1530289310313/RAF+100+2018+ACN+V2.pdf

Unlikely there will be this big a flypast (of manned aircraft anyway) over the smoke ever again.

We'll find that out tomorrow. So far, for the practices they've launched 26 Typhoons from Coningsby in order to be sure of getting 22 serviceable ones into the 'surprise' 100 formation. Add to that it's 9 Red Arrows, 8 BBMF (Spitfires/Hurricanes/Lancaster/Dacota), 9 Hawk T1's (Leeming based but operating Wittering->Boscombe down) 9 Hawk T2's (Valley based, operating Linton->Odiham), 9 Tucanos (Linton based, operating Wattisham->Linton), 7 Tornados (Marham->Marham), 3  F35's (Marham->Marham but if more than one goes tech expect Tonkas to fill in), a mix of about 12 choppers (Chinook, Puma, Juno, Jupiter), and then one each E3, Voyager, A400, C-17, Bae146, Sentinel and a few other bits and bobs and it should just about be do-able.

Was planning to head to 7th floor of our new carpark for this and try to get some snaps, as we are parallel to the Heathrow flight path. (Osterley) But someone scheduled a meeting for this time  >:(

Normally I'd chance it, but it's a my project board one.  :(

Oops - I don't suppose you forgot to book the meeting room, so it'll have to be al-fresco on the roof?  ::)

I could suggest that  :D

Sadly, it's not my room booking otherwise it may have mistakenly been "deleted"  ;D

We had a flight of helicopters come over us no idea what they were but it did include about 4 V2 ospreys . They went over just before 1500 then came back over about half hour later

3 Ospreys (168292, 168306 and 168324) plus 2 VH60's (perm any two from 163260/261/265). Temporary based at Northolt for the Trumpster later in the week. Today was the heli-convoy practice from Northolt up to Stansted, and back via a top secret military establishment beginning with Sand, and ending with Sir Geoff Hurst  8) . Expect a repeat appearance on Thursday/Friday, though this time the guns will probably be loaded.

Saw that in the paper.

Would be fantastic to see. I had never heard of some on the list like the prefect. Have googled them since .

Will have to watch on TV.

Salisbury next years Main Armed Forces day site with Scarborough the following year. That will be absolutely brilliant for the fly pasts.

April 1st this year was a Sunday. The RAF don't do weekends ;D

Yes, because as one RAF Harrier pilot once told me, "I didn't join the Air Force to sail about on a boat".

Saw a 747 which looked as though it was flying into Mildenhall yesterday. Maybe a dry run for Donald, (unless he,s holed up there already). Also today there was a military chopper, (not sure what make :-[) very low over the A143 coming home from Diss.

I did hear fighter aircraft today where I live just over a mile from the mentioned top secret military establishment, so I will listen out tomorrow and arm myself with my DSLR but there are many trees in the vicinity of my house including two oaks in my front garden, so viewing maybe limited. :-\ :-[

Civil 747's are relatively common into Mildenhall - It's cheaper to hire them than the USAF using their own transport types (C-17/C-5). This one was nothing to do with "The Donald". The only known expected movement is the "Escape Jet" (A Military B757 09-0015) which arrived about an hour or so ago. They'll probably squirrel that away in a base hangar somewhere. "The Donald" is due into Brussels late Wednesday/Early Thursday on AF-1, and will fly later in the day to Stansted.

Can't help with the chopper over the A143 - there are dozens of them based at Wattisham.

On Sunday at about middayish I heard loud aircraft noises so went out to see and there was what looked like an airliner and 2 fighter jets heading east.  It looked like they were escorting the airliner, but as I watched another large plane appeared and so there were 2 large planes and 2 fighters.

I assumed then that they were RAF?  :-\  ???

Would anyone know if the flypast is likely to be over Witham, or will I have to go somewhere else to see it?

The ones I have observed in the past have flown straight down the A12 Ron, so I would think you will see them.

Heard a story a while back of a US navy F18 pilot who used his smart watch c/w google maps to navigate home after yet another cabin pressurisation problem had frosted up the inside of the cockpit and totally screwed up all the glass displays  :(

Apparently the poor bugger was in quite a bad way with frostbite by the time he got back  :(

Speaking of aircraft, is there a source of 'touch and go' landings? Going home last night via Hatton Cross as usual, as we came to the BP garage I had a lovely view of a Etihad A380 coming into land, looking rather smart in their gold livery.

Perfect timing as we drove past had a great view of it coming into land, but then I noticed it almost taking off straight away again. Sure it did a touch and go, there were reports of a fire near the airport but other aircraft were also taking off.

Car share buddy thought another aircraft was taxing on hence the sudden take off  :o

We watched it loop around as we made our way to M25, it was last night at around 6pm.

Probably just an unstable approach for some reason. Better to go around and have another go.

Unless you're flying a glider. ::)

Aborted landings are reasonably common... Two or three go arounds a day at Gatwick... Reasons are anything from a ditherer taking off all the way through to a brain fart*. :D

When it's busy, it's not unusual for arrivals separation to slip a bit. I vaguely recall an apt mantra from learning to sail... If in doubt, go about. Basically, you'll only opps it up once, but by taking a step back, you will get another go. :y

*Brain fart being the technical term...

Just watched them go past in the distance from the bedroom window. Not close enough to see any detail apart from big and small.

That's interesting Ron. You obviously missed an interview the BBC did in their coverage, shortly after it started at 0915, with two Bomber Command crew, both who served on Lancs; one as a tail gunner (how did any of them survive, although I knew one personally) and the other a navigator. Very great, interesting men.  The BBC also heavily outlined the history from Lord Trenchard forming the RAF in 1918, and then how the RAF lost 110,000 during WW2, half of that (55,573) in bomber Command alone. :'( :'( :'( :'(

Interesting stuff, and I hope the young were allowed to watch it all in their schools, as those old boys - hero's - and sources of primary historical reference are disappearing fast!

Do you really think that todays children are remotely interested in the history of the RAF? Or either of the world wars? I can tell you, they are not.

The children I know, one a 7 year old grandson loves me talking about history, especially the wars, as did my children.

Don't underrate the children of today, just because a minority are completely [breakless]** and care for fxck all! ::) ::) :D :D ;)

I am trying to type f-e-c-k-l-e-s-s, burt keep getting "breakless"!!

Looked pretty good over Witham, and oh, the sound of that Lancaster!  8) 8) 8) :y

P.S. Far too much of the god-botherers in the BBC coverage; we want REAL pilots, not sky pilots.

I'm not underrating them, Lizzie, I am stating fact from my experience. My wife is head of a Church of England school, 500 children and 97% of them are Muslim speaking over 30 different languages. The are not breakless, as you put it, they are innocent little children. What interest would they have in something like this? My son has no interest in wars that happened 70 and 100 years ago, and I don't expect, nor want, him to.
The world is a totally different place and, while we of a certain generation might want to remember the dead, they have no concept of what it means, and I am not about to educate them.

FFS, it could even make them think that we're still important in the world, when all we are is yesterdays news.

My two examples are just two random ones that I can think of. But I was 'out and about' during this mornings 'celebration' and, I would suggest, was most of the country, esp. the young.

No more to say. Those who lost their lives were heroes, but I don't want, or expect, todays youngsters to have to pay homage to them.

I understand completely where you are coming from STEMO and I think most of us would love to not have to think of wars ever again.

But, unfortunately, man loves to war, and especially the Muslim children you mention will think of the wars going on currently in much of the eastern Islamic world.  For all children (and at the bottom of my post I explained I wanted to say "f-e-c-k-l-e-s-s, but the OOF didn't want to show that word!) they do need to know what war is, the awful truth about the biggest mistake mankind can make, and what exactly it does to everyone involved.  Then, MAYBE, the new generations will not repeat the errors of history and highlight to them that it is the young who have to fight and suffer the most.  No more do we want war glamourised, so that young men join up in 100's of thousands to have a "jolly" and "exciting" war against who ever our country has fallen out with and failed, diplomatically, to resolve the major issues. That is what happened in 1914 as young men were excited about having a go at the Hun, with it all being over before that Christmas!

Imagine a world again, without the knowledge of the effects of war, going joyfully to war as the young have never been taught what can happen in a day, let alone over years, with 20,000 of their kind killed in one day, and in future wars possibly millions in a day.

When children are old enough they need to know the horrors; maybe then we can eradicate that form of extended diplomacy, but only if everyone continues to understand what war is.

That is my opinion coming from a military family who suffered war losses, and also fully understands what my pacifist, but a senior Royal Navy NCO, believed after having his father blown to bits by a German bomb.  He always said it was better to be red than dead, but wanted all the young to understand the terrors of war.

My 14 year old loved watching it on TV, helpfully on an inset day.
But he does love that sort of stuff, and in Air cadets has been known to let other people have a go when he knows too much history ;D

Treated to our own personal airshow at Tunnies Towers yesterday, 2 Apaches overhead for a hour or so, then what must have been all the Chinooks that took part.

We are right next door to Sandhurst Military Academy, I think they have approval for low
Flight? As they come in mega, mega low over our house.

As I said, the RAF don't do weekends. The balloon would have to go up before they got out of bed on a Saturday or Sunday ;D

They were a French Navy Falcon 50 , and two French navy Rafale fighter jets. They left the airshow at Yeovilton on their way home together, and did a photo-shoot over Lyme Bay.

They're practicing for the Trumpster, or more accurately what to do if any protesters get too close. Several reports of fast roping practice from Chinooks and the SAS Dauphins.

Fuel bills likely to be a bit eye watering, though, even with your "miss daisy" driving style. ;)
