Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Replace my HU Challenge...

I would go for the Pioneer DEH-P55BT for the extra £5. ;)

Better headunit, has bluetooth and ipod connectivity if you want it, and you can change the colour of the display to your taste. :)

No, they are not that bad.

But like all mechanical parts, they have a finite life.
Water pumps are one of those things that frequently get overlooked on servicing.

I choose to change mine with the cambelt (V6 petrol).
On a 2.0 4cylinder it is imperative to change with cambelt every 40k as it is driven by the cambelt (V6 is driven off the aux belt).

On a diesel it should be good for 50-60k easily. I suspect yours may have been considerably older...

Lucky escape though. That could have been a LOT worse.

;D It is entirely possible. I have seen people set the sound to some weird levels in cars...

Also, as the wise one says. Eliminate the obvious/easy first.  :)

To the best of my knowledge (need to check wiring diagrams) it is the same in the Omega.

I hope so as I have the same problem myself and need to sort it!

Well your headunit is not the cause of your dead MID.

As you say, even with an aftermarket headunit you will still get time and outside temp etc.

I suspect you need a replacement.
Now I am trying to remember which one your model has.

Is it a full size display with 3 sections or a half size (bottom bit blanked off) with 2 sections?

Replacements are not difficult to obtain and are very easy to fit..... actually thinking about it, I wonder if yours just has the wrong unit fitted (but not plugged in as there are different connectors on the back) and hence that is why it is not working?

Look up how to remove dash (5 min job) and from there it is a breeze to remove the MID. If you can psot some pics that would be good. :)

Oh and I would not bother trying to find an original headunit, go for a decent aftermarket one, much improved sound! :)

I see no reason why it should be a problem as long as you do the setup properly. :)

I'll look for that wiring diagram over the weekend.

98
Ok, good news first.... yes you can do it that way. :)

I am a little suprised it is working ok though. I had the same setup but the output from my old Pioneer headunit (DEH-P7700MP) was too high for the inputs on the Philips amp and made it trip out!

Anyway. I will see if I can find out the wiring information for the Philips setup.
If not, I have no doubt one of the others will be able to provide the information. :)

Well as long as you don't  have the Bose system installed it is really quite straightforward.

The Facelift has more space behind the headunit for the extra wiring will be a big help. :)

My advice would be this:

Get a decent headunit. Pioneer & Alpine are highly recommended. Don't skimp here.

Don't bother with changing the speakers yet. Simply amp the ones that are already there. The standard speakers are excellent and respond very well to being amped.

Amps... I would recommend a good 4 x 30-40w RMS (ignore any other figures they are meaningless). You don't need more power than this for the components.
Recommended amps are Alpine, Phoenix Gold, Pioneer, Kenwood etc.

Sub. Well I use a 12" JL Audio in a sealed unit driven by a Phoenix Gold amp.
Not hugely powerful (around 125w RMS) but very very effective. :)

All you then require is a wiring kit and some time... ;)

What is your budget? We can recommend some kit.

Stuart. Here is the sort of thing you can get cheaply enough.

Finishes soon but worth a bid of up to £45 I would say.

Edit: Sold for £30...  :o for a Pioneer MP3 headunit, you couldn't go wrong at that price!

Indeed, the CDR500 is ridiculously overpriced for what it is!

You can buy a normal CD player cheaply enough on ebay (£30ish) or a reasonable MP3 player for as little as £60.

A CDR500 is around £60-£70... ::)

I am with x25xe on this.

The standard headunits are really not that good, and I would look at upgrading to a decent aftermarket one. The difference in sound quality is very very noticable.

You don't have to go down the road of new headunit and changer. A cd/mp3 headunit is an option. You can find some real bargains on ebay.
As a general rule, go for Pioneer or Alpine and you will be fine.

If unsure, jst ask. :)

Time for purchase of the Autoleads adaptor then. Will sort the memory issue, not sure about the display...

Switch the RED & YELLOW connectors on the headunit wiring (DO NOT switch round on the car wiring, this would be a very bad idea!).

The headunit wiring should be very easy as these wires are on bullet connectors that simply pull apart.

This will sort the memry problem. As for the display, that is a question of one of the other wires, and I can't remember which one it is!  :-[
