Title: The Next Cambelt Party..
Post by: ClarCE on 11 April 2007, 12:27:32
After the success of the Brackley parties, I was wondering if we should be having another one soon, and indeed where to have it.

I could possibly host one in Newbury, although parkings a premium, but plenty of room around the roads to park on, I also have a drive + garage, and a big front lawn that can be parked on by 3 cars.

I also have an almost industrial bbq!

Anyone interested?  We'd be needing a couple of specialists who know what they are doing to change cambelts and generally do mechanical type things.. Also have a travel lodge up the road, and some half way decent places to stay over in town if need be.

And when?  Sooner, later? April, May, June..

I've seen a thread for a non-cambelt one, this would be the mechanical version of that  :)

There have been rumours for one at the end of the month, dont know if that will happen yet.
I am up for one, when I heard the rumours I thought I would do both cars, but on checking, only the 2.2 is in need of one, so Cambelt, Aux Belt, Water Pump, New coolant tank and coolant all in stock ready :)

I'm no good with spanners, but trying to learn a bit.

Yours may be a bit far for me to be honest, with a month old baby at home etc.

The non-cambelt one has come and gone.  It was very mechanical, as in big levers and hammers.  :P

When I say specialists needed, I should add that I can take care of the following:

Rocker Cover Gasket Change
Breather System Clean
Wishbones
Droplinks
Front Brake Discs
Front Brake Pads
Thermostat change (depending on how that goes this weekend)
Exhaust Cats Back (depending on how that goes this weekend)
Central Door Locking Motors
General Servicing

Cheers,

Chris.

Actually, that probably is achievable in a day IF it goes to plan.  It would be a bloody long day mind, and would take a couple on it full time...

Lol. I was attempting to do a list of things I 'can do' rather than 'can do all in one day'! Although if I did one of my alnighters with the flood lights anythings possible  :P

I'd be up for that Chris.  I've always got spare room at mine for those who want to make a day of it - granted I'm a half hour drive or so away fron Chris - but the roads back to Newbury are fun.

Can't say that I'm mechanically minded but the best way I've always leanred was to watch!

Hmmm. I wonder if my parents have any holidays booked?

They have plenty of parking for Omegae and are in the right geographical area (Mortimer).

Looks like we're getting some interest here now, and even if we don't do that many cambelts / if any - im sure there are lots of other bits we could all pull together and do - and make a bit of a meet + bbq out of it (can you tell im desperate to try out my new bbq?!)

::)Omegea? Interesting plural. Perhaps it should be submitted to the next collins, oxford concise edition?

Hey.. i would be interested, I am in Bristol about an hour away from newbury..

I need my Cambelt doing...

I am no expert but have a BTEC in mechanical engineering so i learn quickly!

June would be better for me... I am away most of May.

Judging from the positive comments I had from the owners of the cars I worked on at Brackley, I'm happy to lend my services for changing cambelts etc.. 4 pots I can do in an hour.. totally confident to do V6 changes too. I'm sure with enough Notice Markie can come along too.. he's getting to know Omega's inside out (after helping me with about 10 of them so far..!!)

Although I've just sucesfully done one... I don't think we can do top end rebuild / head off work in one day :D

There is actually a member in the slough area I believe, who needs cambelt, breathers, backbox and maybe cam covers done. I've been meaning to help him for a while, but I've been rushed to the point of crazy... I would like if we couldl fit that one in.

If stat changes were to be done.. a plentiful supply of the 2 different types of seal is in order.. PLUS the coolant transfer pipe O rings.. plus a couple of spare transfer pipes... they occasionally break on removal!

I'm definately up for doing a long day at it.. and being an onsite mechanic :)

Would need to sort somewhere to stay... and hopefully enough beer to drink that I loose my inhibitions when all the work is done ;D ;D ;D

I have several small jobs to do to do, and I only have the w/e of the 28th of April to do them (front brakes, brake fluid flush, parking brake, auto box service, oil change).  EP and Bo Bo have both changed cars and need cambelts again.  Therefore, we are trying to get together for the 28th and maybe the 29th.  If we all want to try to get together then that would be great.  Otherwise there seems to be plenty of interest so there could be 2 cambelt parties soon.

We haven't sorted a location.  I'd be up for staying the night and drinking this time!  :D

I may be able to host something again in the summer.  Trouble is, places to stay are non existent round here.  If the crown is supposedly the best, i dred to imagine the 2 star places....

Would love to come and get my hands dirty

I need my Cam belt and water pump doing. Also could do with Gearbox update if any tech 2 people gonna be there?

9th and 10th June and 30th and 1st July would be great for me, I work shifts so it all gets very difficult.

I might well be up for this now that JamesV6CDX might be "laid off" for a while.
Need cambelt/waterpump, rocker gaskets & breathers doing.....

Well...

So it looks like Theo & BoBo & Elite Pete are sorting something out 28/29 April? So are you three going it alone?

JamesV6 - excellent cheers for your offer, I'm sure I can put you up for the night, although it would only be the sofa - its nice and warm in my living room though :)

As for dates, its always difficult to please everyone - if I do a list here, just reply with your name and the dates you can do - I don't want to bring more down than we can actually physically do - so first come first serve...

We also need to confirm those locations, as said before I have a drive with garage, but you'll still only get 1 car on there - then my front lawn can fit FOUR cars (not three, tested at weekend!) so theres lots of room to do work there... Parking all around the side streets, just not on the road outside the house as the neighbours go mental..

ClarCE - End April / All May

I can highly recommend James for cambelts, my 2.2 has been a different machine since it was changed, more power and super silent when cold now. The old belt was very, very loose!

Had my waterpump, aux belt & cambelt done in just over an hour!  :y

This party sounds good, but I don't think I will be able to make it  :(

Depends when in May / June it is....

I'm hoping to get mine sorted this weekend.

I might still be up for popping in & having a nose around depending on the date....

BoBo - Possible Visit to Say Hi!

I haven't heard from anyone else in a while on the 28th.  It is the only weekend that I definitely have free until at least August and my MOT is up in June.  I am free to help others then, or just do my own.  I always prefer to work with others around, especially when I have to get deep under the car.

If anyone is free maybe we can get together on a weekday?  I've got lots of those free  ;) ;D

If this doesn't happen on the 28th I've got nothing planned as yet (apart from nursing a hangover, meeting a school friend on the Fri) if you want to come round here. I'll get in the way, err give you hand & I have a couple of niggley little things I want to to try & sort on mine.

As you know you're always welcome to use my place. I'm on days for a month now so won't be around til mid afternoon on weekdays but there's always someone here....

So how about mid june, 16-17th for an actual cambelt party? Perhaps this should be the big one that we have in Brackley rather than here in Newbury..

And in the mean time - i.e. around the 28th April - we can do something smaller - I'm happy to attack those cam covers for you BoBo but I can't change cambelts (at least not yet)..

Sounds good to me too, although I doubt I'll make the June date.  If we can get the tools and stuff together for the 28th I can do V6 cambelts and/or camcovers.  If someone can bring jackstands for me that would be great!  A jack could help too.

Sounds like a plan to me :y
Sounds good to me too, although I doubt I'll make the June date.  If we can get the tools and stuff together for the 28th I can do V6 cambelts and/or camcovers.  If someone can bring jackstands for me that would be great!  A jack could help too.

Well I'm a bit confused now  :-? (It doesn't take much I'm afraid)

So is the plan to do something in Newbury at the end of this month, which is getting close really fast - or is there something being planned elsewhere?

TB - Hows it looking for you in June?

Right, so who have we got coming on the 28th then?

Obviously I'll be there :P

You and Theo BoBo?
JamesV6 - are you in?
Anyone else?

Be good to have a list of work we're going to do - although if there not much be good to get the bbq going and have a mini-meet of sorts..

I won't know whether I'll be going until after the weekend.

As far as I know theolodian is a definate.

JamesV6CDX says he'll be there.

Omega_MV6 has a post in general chat about needing a camblet doing, it's a bit of a journey for him but might be worth asking (assuming you can fit him in).....

I would love to come down on the 28th but I want to do the Cambelt, tensioners, water pump, aux belt, cam covers, and O/S exhaust manifold gasket in one go which I think is a bit much for the day so I will do it at home where it doesn't matter if I dont get it all done, plus I dont want to give the wife anything to moan about as I only get so many passes out and I want to save it till the Lakes do :y

I am down for Newbury if ClarCE is hosting.  BBQ, etc. it's all good!  I can stop by Brackley on the way down and pick up tools if TB is providing.  I will reiterate my request for jackstands and trolley jack.  Otherwise I will be bringing some tools and my share of BBQ consumables.

Don't have; V6 cam kit, 30mm spanner, or 8Nm torque wrench.

Hi Theo,

We're looking a bit light on the ground to be honest - I'm not sure if JamesV6 is coming or not, hopefully if he is then he can bring that kit with him, otherwise we'll have to borrow from elsewhere - if James can't make it are you going to be able to change this cambelt on your own - obviously I can help, but not sure what I'm doing there (although I might have a better idea after Kevin and myself change my Cams this Saturday..)

If it does turn out to be just me and you will it still be worth it?  I don't mind helping as I said - should be able to do your autobox fluid change too, having just done mine (and boy does that make a difference)..

Let me know - James if you're reading this whats your plan buddy?

Cheers,

Chris.

Chris,

I can easily handle V6 cambelts.  I want to do my autobox and brakes.  I can do those on my own if I get jackstands, but I'd much rather be around others when that deep under the car.  Also easier to bleed brakes with 2 people.  No huge pressure, but I'm happy to drive down even if it is only the 2 of us.

Cheers,

Theo

It's a case of having to, 74k FSH but no record of cambelt change  :o
Service manager said that doesn't necessarily mean it hasn't been done  :-/
Had it nearly four weeks & haven't gone above 4k revs yet  :(

If James can't make it I can always hold on to the cambelt kit if TB is agreeable & either pass it on to theo or bring it myself if I'm going. I'm also trying to get hold of axle stands, funny how some people seem to disappear when you ask a favour  ::)

Not sure if I'll be able to make it over as that'll require a pass out to tinker with cars 2 weekends in a row  :o

I will at least try to pop over and say hello.

However, I do have a V6 locking kit which I can leave with ClarCE this weekend if required.

Thats great then no problem - much safer with two people!  My housemates will be here anyhow I expect - always around when theres a bbq threatened ;)

I've got 2x 2 ton axel stands and a 2 ton trolley jack here we can use - also got my car ramps which makes things a million times easier - just a bit scary going up and down on your own, much better with someone guiding screaming STOP!

If I can grab a video camera from work and the GF does not mind I might make it over If 4 pots are welcome.

I have one or two jobs i might want doing that i can tackle myself, apart from bleading my brakes need 2 People.

Might think about doing my front disks and pads also.

I would do my Wishbones but i don't fancy driving all the way home without them being Tracked.

Come on down Craig, more than welcome mate :) Sure we can fit those bits in, did my own front wishbones and everything else not too long ago..

You know I hold no bias against the 4 pots ;)  When I got mine it was 50/50 between the 2.5 and a 2.0 - I had no clue what I was buying, its only because the V6 was cheaper that I bought it!

Sorry for the late reply on this thread

Currently I'm due to be working on this Sat... HOWEVER I'm in the process of sending my Boss a grovelling holiday request... if that doesn't work.. I will try and get someone to work my shift... so I'd say my chances of coming are well over 90%.....

Small / Large meet, I don't mind.. I will happily do a few cambelts, etc etc while there too.

Don't worry Chris.  I'll still try to hook up with Bo Bo, but can do it on my own.  Now that the parking brake works, all I have to do is the front brakes and an oil change so no big deal.

Lucky For Me I guess My Girl Friend Is happy for me to do my own thing as she gets on with her stuff and we make time for each other to do stuff together, lucky i guess that we both share hobbies.

I know the feeling.

My wife has a shortage of hobbies every so often and it is difficult. I've got so many hobbies I'm always neglecting one of them - so I am never short of something to do. Strangely enough I don't often join her in front of the TV to waste an evening watching yet another load of old dross.

Fortunately since Christmas she's got addicted to playing World Of Warcraft so as soon as she sits in front of her PC she's occupied for the evening and it's garage time for me!
