I appreciate the feedback all. I know what you're saying,  they don't explode like a clock.

I suppose ideally it would be done now, but situations being what it is.

Much thanks to all. And thanks for clarification of the situation James. In terms of the travel I fully appreciate you'd not want to risk any legal issues, don't want you risking anything on mine or anyone's behalf.

Also Thanks for Mark, yes Gaydon is just round the corner, typically it would have been mere seconds for you to glance over, see what I'd done wrong and probably refit and adjust the belt in its entirety, and probably sort the starting issue, cure the squeak in the passenger seat in the time it took me to return with a cuppa! But alas not to be.

I'd be happy to travel, at least putting any risk on my shoulders. Just confirming what I asked in the pm James, do you have a timing kit tool? Ta all, again  :y

Ahhh  :(

Had it at the back of my mind that it was worth sticking on, but not strictly speaking necessary, given how hard it is to actually crank an engine over for anyone that's ever done it plugs in. Ta  :y

General Car Chat / Re: Brake Bleeding Question
« on: 29 April 2020, 11:34:49 »
If the essential result is that you don't want the piston to move toward the disc, would not a handy block of wood wedge this fine? Leaving you to bleed the brakes as per?  ???

Just to clarify it's a case of if the help is still on the table... may well be they don't want some smelly Norther person coming in their house coughing all over the place using their tools!  :D

More than happy to do the job with some assistance, in fact that's the preferred ideal solution. I will pay someone (good) if I have to, and equally will do the job on my own (again, if I have to) but as I say that extra pair of eyes will be worth their weight in gold. She's got s few days off in a little over a week so I'm just gathering my options for now.

Also, just to add to the list - do I recall that the crank locking tool (one on the left) is not strictly speaking necessary? Reason is I don't have one, got the other bits, not that.

Well, it's that lovely time of the decade, cambelt time again  :y And as the Omega is the daily transport for the other half as Community Nurse I owe it to her to keep the Old Girl in roadworthy safe condition.

I had a very kind off from a fellow OOFer to do the job myself with him looking over my shoulder so to speak, checking I'm doing everything right, though I'm not sure under current guidelines that's going to happen, however I'll check with him in due course. Options are...

1. Ignore it (no!)
2. Take it to local garage (no!)
3. Do it myself (have the tools, not the confidence!)
4. See about other qualified OOF persons on here - doesnt matter the mileage I have to travel as I know it'll be a good standard of work, Serek etc...

We're between Stratford-upon-Avon and Northampton essentially in a cow field... what do we think?  :)

General Car Chat / Re: Autonomous cars
« on: 06 February 2020, 23:48:38 »
Its ultimately legistation and the practicalities, not the technology that will inhibit / hold back autonomy. As above the scenario of 'kill two occupants or three at the bus stop' all need hammering out. Then when EVERY possible scenario has been worked out, deliberated by every single government in the world, who allow/disallow what the OEMs have decided, then the autonomous car will appear on the roads.... except they will get hacked. Hacking an RAF Typhoon aint so easy, not so much because the tech is impossible, but because no terrorist can get their hands on one for a weekend to dismantle and fiddle with...not so with your average car in the car park.

We still don't have 'theft proof' cars, 30+ years after immobilisers/deadlocks and so on, so hack proof, death-proof autonomous cars, well... its a lot further off than many people think. Again, its not the tech, but the implementation thats the killer.

PS thats before we hit something which may be totally unexpected... people may not actually take to the idea as much as people think...Amazon Kindle anyone? Death of the book, forever? Hmmm....  :y

General Discussion Area / Re: End of new build petrol cars...
« on: 06 February 2020, 00:46:48 »
Anyone heard that at these motorway service stations with charging points for your EV, the £ of leccy equates to the same as petrol/diesel?! So the pence per mile is identical to ICE car. Yyyup, astonishingly enough theyre using it as a cash cow, whodathunkit?

One definite result of widespread EVs I dont know if anyone else cynical has thought of....electricity prices going through the roof.

Unless there's some smart meter that can tell what 'kind' of electric you're using can be designed ie: you pay normal rate for general household useage, but pay 'premium' rate for EV electric. If not, well, as electric will be the new sought after commodity as oil is now....we all might be at the mercy of the utilities companies....even more so than we are now!

My thoughts, anyway  :y

General Car Chat / Re: Any opinions of the Vauxhall Insignia?

If gearbox in any way vaguely reluctant to engage, run. Common fault apparently, the bearings I beleive fail. Mate had his go weeks after he bought his. The thing exploded. Got a replacement box... gearbox specialist fitted it for him, only to tell him needed the bearings doing in the replacement box, too  ::)

Shame as I like them fine, hard ride, like everything has now. Tiny rear visibility...like everything has now. No spare wheel...like, of you get the idea!  :D

Omega General Help / Re: Starting trouble .... fuel?
« on: 30 January 2020, 23:35:58 »
Mine is still doing similar issues to what you say. Once started, even if run for only two seconds, you shut down, then start her up again, she fires instantly - leading me to think fueling, possibly fuel pressure being lost somewhere. I have a FPR which I'll be trying at some point too, though.

Start with the cheapest or free repairs first, that's my motto, and work up. (not that my advice is worth much lately  :D ::) )

regulators are so simple(a piston and a spring) and reliable that a new one is unlikely to change anything.
Fuel pump, wiring(include the CPS, cam sensor and MAF) and the pickup in the tank are the parts I would be looking at.

But only AFTER measuring the fuel pressure.
