gear box oil
« on: 23 July 2007, 23:58:00 »

... in a diesel Astra. According to Haynes a manual gearbox should have 'Gear oil 09 120 541' in it. The 'box I've just taken out .... what tw4t of a job! >:( ... had a horrible EP looking oil in it, whereas my 'new' box was nearly filled with red ATF.
Does anyone know what I should have in it?
All answers gratefully recieved. ;)

ATF is not oil. It only goes in autoboxes.

Many more modern manual gearboxes do require thinner oils that do resemble ATF in appearance. I'm not sure they have worked their way as generic oils onto the shelves of motor factors, etc. yet so probably best to buy that part number at a dealer and use the proper oil.

Thanks Kevin
You're bob on. I asked at the dealer, bought their gearbox oil and it is red ... just like ATF.

I have been confused about this as well, not in my cars, but my Transit Van.  The Haynes states Duckhams Dex II or a Ford specification.  Motor factors checked their Commer application list and gave me something that was NOT Dex II but was red.  As I was unsure, I did not bother.  Been meaning to get to the Ford dealer ever since but not TC there :(
