car cam interior roof lights sunroof power supply
« on: 05 February 2016, 17:40:50 »

anyone know which wires to use for a car cam from the centre roof lights (or sunroof)?  i need 12v power to come on when the ignition is on. i checked all the connectors for the light console with a multi meter and found a + and - that looked fine, I wired in the 12v to usb power supply but now the passenger light comes on when the ignition is on irrespective of the light switch position (or whether the car cam is connected to the usb supply). it seems the draw on the 12v to USB converter switches on the light.

i took the second and second to last pins from the 8 pin light connector.

i removed the led from the usb supply, no difference.

You need to wire the pos to the car side of the red wire, and the neg to the light side of the red wire... As you have done it you have essentially bypassed the light switch...

Alternatively you can use the sunroof loom which is tucked a bit further back in the roof ;)

I used the sunroof wiring rather than the lights. The multi meter showed which was an ignition switched positive, and I earthed it with one of the mounting screws.

thanks i will cut the negative lead that i carefully soldered to the socket pin and wire it to a mounting screw instead.  Should have done that in first place i was being too fussy trying to return the negative via wire instead of via body.

thanks but if i read that right wouldn't that put the cam in series with the light?

Possibly :-\ but what you had done hadn't worked as one might expect...

Sunroof loom is definitely first choice as it includes a speed pulse as well if required ;)

Thanks Omegaman.  all fixed now, this works for anyone who needs it:

get a red and black length of wire, remove light cluster and take indoors, in comfort (and no longer upside down) solder red wire to second to last of the 8 struts coming from the input socket.  crimp and solder an eye to the black wire. undo one of the screws behind the light cluster, fit the eye and screw it back in, this is the earth. refit light cluster, the red lead is now a +ve supply, only when the ignition is on.

You could insert a fuse as well if you want but the supply to the light is already fused and you are piggybacking on that.

I don't have the wiring diagram to hand, but as a rule black wires on the Omega are Switched Positive...

the black and red i mention relate to the wire supplied by the user, not the car wiring.  you can use red as the earth if you really want to ???.  or purple or green, whatever you're into :y
