Title: m.o.t
Post by: raywilb on 08 May 2019, 16:14:58
have just had a call from the m.o.t station . my car has failed its test but instead of giving me a fail they have taken it on their selves to do the job which was a brake pipe & tighten the handbrake cable which has stretched some. i either get it back later today or first thing tomorrow. the actual test date is 7th june.  so quite pleased  :y

I see a handbrake service in your immediate future... The cable only stretches because the mechanism in the drums is starting to seize up ;)

Indeed  :y
handbrake adjustment is done with the shoes ,not at the compensator or lever
even though it's much quicker to turn that one 10mm nut  ;D

congrats on the MOT anyway  :)

the handbrake was completely overhauled a couple of weeks or so ago. every thing stripped down cleaned etc, shoes had plenty on. re. pads were renewed & cable was renewed. i know all is working has it should

you have got me thinking , i remember slackening off the shoes to remove the drums & cleaning all components, replacing the drums putting new pads on  then turning my attention to the cable . DO NOT remember adjusting the drums which means i probably didnt. i now know they wasnt. oops. it was only the cable adjusted to required clicks

I would start by slackening the tension that they have just added ;)

Then adjust at the drums as per the guide :y

when re-fitting the drum/disc , you adjust the shoes with enough clearance so they just go on,without catching/dragging (making sure there is no lip on the drum part if old drum/disc is used) a tug on the cable rear of the brake will bring the shoes on for testing .

then , once re-assembled , (including road wheels torqued up ) you can adjust the cable at the handbrake lever to the correct number of clicks *

* 7 clicks recommended  by TIS i think , recently discussed the 7 click flagpole  ;D setting is to avoid the handbrake coming on during suspension movement
i do 4 clicks and never had issues with my Carltons (same brakes and suspension pretty much)

7 clicks is far too many, don't care what TIS says. Any more than four is excessive.
