Omega General Help / Re: Poor screenwasher performance.
« on: 01 November 2022, 12:33:50 »
Further to my posting of September 2021 and the warning by Stemo to wash out the bleach or the pump will stop working.
Well I did wash out the bleach but, preparing the car for the MOT I found the screen washers had stopped working again. I cleaned the filter, not a gauze filter as I had expected, but a mesh in the end of the cone shaped rubber connector to the pump. No result. I checked the voltage to the pump when activated and it was fine. So the pump had failed as Stemo had warned, also possibly due to doing only 400 or so miles in the car in the last year. New ones are available on the net for £12 or so inc. postage but I had no time to get one before the MOT. As the headlamp washers are working I now realise I could have connected the front screen washer tube to the head lamp washer tube and blanked off the tubes to the head lamp washer and rear screen which would have covered the MOT requirement. Thank you Stemo. This website is so valuable.

Thanks Dr AndyB. The extension bar definitely needs to be slim as there is very little space.

Omega General Help / Re: Rust treatment
« on: 30 November 2021, 17:54:05 »
I buy phosphoric acid. It is not easy to get hold of but is available online though I had to wait ages for it to arrive. It needs to be diluted to 10% before use so a little goes a long way. It converts rust to an inert phosphate layer but make sure to get most of the rust off before using it
If I am using it on body work with a paint finish I wash it off before applying a zinc based primer. If it is on the underbody I let it dry and then apply a mixture I saw described online. Equal measures of white spirit or paraffin/ heating oil. Put any old candle wax, stubs etc in the white spirit for a couple of weeks.  The wax is slow to dissolve but I make sure the solution is saturated. Then add to the paraffin. For me it works very well. I did try adding a little of the phosphoric acid to the mix but it will not blend in.

I had this problem intermittently. They would work when I first drove off but then fail again after the ignition had been switched on and off.
I used the Tomtom as a speedometer to make it legal to drive. Then I changed the battery as it was starting to fail and they have worked perfectly since. I wonder if the old battery voltage was a little too low.

This is close to the last post but a simpler query. I have removed headlamps in pre facelift cars without problem. My 2003 2.6 has just failed the MOT as the offside headlamp was too low and the adjusters would not lift it. There is nothing loose! However I expect it will be the standard problem.
I removed the plastic strip below the head lamp in one piece and a self tapping screw and 8mm bolt above the headlamp. The head lamp is now loose with nothing apparently holding it but I cannot pry it out. There is no sign of the deeply recessed bolt below the headlamp that I was used to on prefacelifts. Have I missed some thing? It looks as if I need to remove the front wing but I am sure that is not necessary. I would be grateful for any advice.

My screenwashers on my 2003 2.6 estate suddenly stopped working.
The reservoir was full, I suspected a fuse but found it was shared with the windscreen wipers which were fine.
I accessed this page for advice. I thought the pump had failed as I heard no noise when I tried to use it but a clogged filter was a possibility.
I connected a narrower gauge plastic tube to a hosepipe and washed out the reservoir thoroughlyvia the filler pipe.
No benefit. I recalled once being told that a 1% bleach solution will clear green mould from the inside of clear plastic tubing so I put some strong bleach in the reservoir and left it overnight.
I was not hopeful but today the washers worked perfectly.
I have washed the bleach off the car but left some in the reservoir for now as if used when it’s raining the bleach will be washed away.
Very pleased. My attempts to get at the motors had not been successful and I thought I might have to remove the front end for access.
Dilute the bleach you've left in there right away, or you'll find that the pump stops working soon.

Thanks. I had already had second thoughts on leaving the bleach in the system and have washed it out and refilled with diluted CP concentrate. On third thoughts that was what I was using when the filter blocked. Ah well, I least I know how to deal with the problem if it blocks again.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Speedo and Rev counter
« on: 02 August 2020, 00:16:54 »
My speedometer and rev counter started to fail intermittently in my 2003 2.6 saloon.
This topic has been reported before and their replacement was recommended. I managed temporarily by using a sat nav as that that gave me my speed and made driving legal.
During the lockdown the battery started losing its charge. I replaced it and now these instruments function without problem.
I think (and hope) it must have been a problem with the battery voltage dropping fractionally, sufficient to stop these instruments working but not enough to affect starting etc.
The car has done 154,000 miles using no oil and even the air conditioning works thanks to the previous owner, an engineer, who replaced all the air conditioning seals and maintained the car himself. It has heavy duty rear springs so I do not have the problem of it bottoming on the suspension when loaded and these have only a minor effect on the handling when unloaded.

Omega General Help / Door card removal
« on: 08 August 2019, 17:20:38 »
Hi everyone.
My 2003 2.6 estate door solenoid stopped working.the drivers door would open and lock with the key and the remote worked on the other doors so I was not going to bother getting it fixed. Then the  locking tab on the door started staying down, again no problem until I found that occasionally I could not get the door open from the inside or outside and had to get out through the passenger door. I have replaced the solenoids on other Omegas but not the facelift model. I have removed all the screws including the one under the plastic interior door lever. Do I have to take off the decorative wood finished panel. Do I have to remove the door light. On the new site I cannot get access to the advice and videos formerly available on the old site.
Can anyone help. I did manage to get the door tab up by pulling hard with pliers locked on with the window down.  I tried to release the window opening switches by levering up as was necessary on the old model and must have dis connected the switch as I cannot get the window to close and it’s raining tonight!

Thanks Dr Gollum,
Are the linkages easily easily accessible from below?
I had hoped that there might be way way of removing the gaiter etc. In order to access the linkages from above.
Have you heard of this problem before?
I was hoping it might be just normal wear.

The play is fore and aft. Nice to see that naval terminology is still in use.
It feels as if a securing bolt or bolts are loose.
The gears still change. I am worried in case it worsens and the range of play prevents gear change in this auto gear box.
By release mechanism I presume you mean the release bar that is pulled upwards to permit movement of the lever. That works fine.
Thanks for your interest
