A team of Australians believe they have found the remains of captain Cooks ship Endeavour although they admit further checks/tests are necessary to confirm this.Something of an ignominious end[albeit renamed Lord Sandwich2]for such a famous ship.At the end she was used as a prison ship during the American war of independence and was scuttled off Newport U.S.A. along with a dozen other ships.In the grand scheme of things it makes no real difference if is her or not,but I think it's always good[and historically interesting]to be able to pinpoint something like this.

That is very interesting, but only on an historical basis. For those not interested in history whatever they find will just be a pile of old wood and nothing like what was found when they excavated the Mary Rose :D ;)
I would sooner those who can salvage the Amsterdam from the beach at St.Leonards, Hastings, East Sussex. According to historians everything below her top decks is still there, like the time capsule the Mary Rose was. She was run aground in 1749, but The sea bed mud there is a wonderful preservative. ;)

The remains of my old handbrake backplate currently residing in the back garden looks remarkably like whatever state the Eneavour is in now. :)
Do keep us updated if it is the Endeavour, and will they be raising it and towing it up the Humber? :D

The manifest would have been logged... shipping = duty = records...
Besides, someone would have spent a couple of days carving the ships' name right across the arse end of it ::)

Carving wood exposes end grain and end grain is the first to rot
Lets hope the vin number is in the mud :P
If it was full of gold ,it would be done by now
there is a lot less interest in the history side of things
but the yanks like history, (as they have none of their own) so maybe .....

The age of the wood and the shape, design, of any ribs. The design of any metal fittings, like the nails, would also give the researches the information they need. As DG also states, any carved wood with parts of the name Endeavour, or Lord Sandwich II, would be the final proof, but I suspect after so long on the sea bed that may well have rotted away long ago. However, it does all go back to what preservative qualities the sea bed has at Newport USA. ;)
