Blower speed controller/resistor - new or s/h?
« on: 25 August 2016, 20:57:19 »

Hi guys, I have an '02 CDX Estate 2.6 – I was looking on eBay for a s/h replacement blower fan resistor ("hedgehog") and found a number of vendors selling brand new ones for around £20. Example here: http://preview.tinyurl.com/z4ynvvv

Has anyone had any experience of using these cheap ones or would it be better to get a known-working used one?

Thanks,
Chris

Genuine new around £200 if my memory serves.
Pattern new - never heard of such a thing, so unknown.
From a breaker on here, should be ok, but no way of telling how long it might last - with the best will in the world.
You pays your money............ ;)

Replaced mine about 8 months ago along with the entire fan unit as sounded like a fag card in a bike wheel.

Eventually the whole lot packed up so bought S/H fan and hedgehog from Nigelof the bay.

Been working ever since...think they are damaged by water leaking from scuttle /drain so expect it to have evidence of corrosion.

Quite a challenging position required for replacing it though...entire glove box requires removal, and ensure you have disconnected battery first  :y

'cause if you're not used to removing the glovebox, you might want to ensure the passenger airbag is fully disabled... just in case.

I'll test the one on the breaker I've just obtained, if it's ok it'll go in the parts for sale section

Ah, for airbag, as you have to undo 3 mountings?

It won't go off, assuming nobody drives into it :)

Phew, you're not kidding! Upside-down in a footwell with restricted access and visibility is not my idea of fun.

How do you tell if a unit is fully functional – is there a way of measuring its continuity/resistance with a multimeter?

Yes
Using the continuity setting you should get a beep if you touch any two of the four terminals with the probes. If any terminal doesn't seem to do anything then it is nfg.

[assuming that the hedgehog is a simple switched series resistor not an electronic speed controller]
