Title: Very stange TV / android / router issue
Post by: Jimbob on 08 November 2018, 16:45:27
A friend has a setup, oldish LG TV, android tv box for iplayer etc amongst other uses, and a humax freesat box.

NONE of these connected to router via wired or wireless, as soon as both boxes are connected to the TV via separate HDMI leads, then the plusnet router looses connection.

Swapped router out, better one just suffers packet loss without actually dropping the connection.
Tried router on different ring, different cables, microfilters.
Connected Android box via Ethernet cable, causes other devices (phones etc connected via wifi) to have packet loss.

All very strange, can only think this box has a strange fault, but cannot understand how it causes a router to drop connection when its not even linked to it!

Should add that with either the android or humax connected. Everything works fine. It’s only when both have hdmi connections to tv made that the issues start.

Sounds to me like the HDMI cables are radiating a lot of RFI and it's being picked up by poor internal phone cabling.

First thing I'd try is plugging the router straight into the master socket test connector and disconnecting the internal phone wiring. See if that improves the resilience of the broadband connection.

Ive passed that on, only saw one socket, with a decorative plate on.

Its a rented cottage build onto a farm house...apparently open reach messed up installing it and cut off next door!

Also, check the devices in question (Android, router and TV) haven't been pwned. It might be they are flattening the router.

Additionally, if uPnP is enabled on router, disable that (which everyone should anyway)

Hmm. It's possible ethernet is being passed through the HDMI. Absolutely certain none of the devices are connected to the router, though?

Assuming that the setup was working and only recently went awry for no apparent reason, then it might be a failed firmware download or failure to apply such update on the router. Disconnect all devices from the router and perform the hard reset procedure. As well as a factory reset that should also re-download and install any outstanding firmware updates.

The 2 devices are both old. But have never been used together until now. Several routers have been tried as it’s the one thing I’ve plenty of spares of.

Try disabling Wi-Fi on Android box. I presume the freeview box isn't internet connected? If it is trying disabling that wi-fi. Do one then the other and see if that helps.

no network active at all on android box, still knocks the router off when both connected.

No NTE5 master, just a Line Jack master.  Have advised to remove ring wire.  After that I think we are into realms of upgrading a few cables to get some screened ones.

Removing the ring wire from the master fixed it!

That should have been disconnected back in the days when you had ADSL ;D

So as Kevin Wood says, something is emitting nasty frequencies.

They’ve just moved to this cottage. And adsl is all it has!  Deepest darkest Wales!

I’ve removed that wire plenty of times on the off chance...never had such a definite fix with it before!

The android box was all they had in the last place. No tv signal at all. But did have fibre. So the android box met all their tv needs.

The ring wire acts as a decent aerial. The usual problem is it injects noise onto the B leg, which causes (mostly CRC) errors, and ADSL resyncs. Generally worse in hostile RF areas, or when Christmas lights are on/flashing.

In this case, sounds like one or more of the devices are electrically noisy, and the ring wire is picking that up.  Suspect Sammy needs a chat with some of the devices ;)

Yep, the symptom is gone, but the cause is probably still there, in that the HDMI cables are radiating something nasty. Are they cheap looking cables?

I ask as, if they're prone to radiating interference, they're equally prone to collecting it, so they might find the picture / sound on the TV drop out every so often.

Good to have got to the bottom of it, though. :y

Must sort the wiring here some time as the muppets who built the place connected one wire out of each pair to the A, B and ring lines on the faceplate. ::)

Not an issue with ADSL as I've got a filter faceplate, but there are some nearby sources of RF interference that might upset blow the @rse out of the phones. ;D

Ive certainly seen better cables ;)  I know money is tight currently, so unless theres a problem, it wont be remedied....esp as the clutch bleed lasted a day before no clutch again, no great suprise, but probably means the end of the car

Fair enough, but worth bearing in mind in case of further issues. :y

Definately, although the clutch pedal has self healed over night, must be an airlock somewhere.
