Matchless Project 2 arrives
« on: 14 September 2006, 09:42:02 »

Project 1 was a N reg Elite Estate, 63000 miles, full main dealer 'care', original cambelt etc but minus teeth on cambelt and 16 bent valves. Has been in use now since February and just needs some minor cosmetics to finish it...if I had the time.

Project 2 was seen on ebay, Dec '98 CDX estate, 54000 miles, looked perfect but had 'diesel like noises' from engine. No Bids????
Did a deal and collected it last night, it is one owner and looks immaculate.
Came with CCRT700, Vx roof rack, Vx boot liner, Vx steering wheel lock (it did live in Liverpool), 5 alloys and a Haynes book of lies. I need to have a better look at it but cant believe my luck, and I got there before McB.

Downside? drivers seat is stuck (or cant cope with MarkDTM's weight  ;D) one door check strap is detached and the noises sound like a failed cambelt tensioner.

Only problem is that its 3rd in line behind Allenm's heads, and an over-ambitious patio design, but im sure a new cambelt kit can be snook onto it without 'er_in_doors finding out, reconnect the propshaft then see how it goes.

Matchless I never knew you had a project I obviously missed that one.

Sounds like a good project what with the low miles etc.

I am curious though how come the propshaft was disconnected?

Prop shaft had to be disconnected to tow it home as its an auto.

It is an impressive find though I did find three problems with it last night as the steersman.

1) The steering is bloody heavy
2) The brakes are bloody heavy
3) The battery doesn't charge.

My recommended fix.....get the engine running!  ;D

Sounds like a failing cam belt tensioner and the belt is slapping about.....

What a slapper!

And, just for the benefit of all concerned, I have been aware of this car but Pete was in there first and we even talked about its merits before he went for it.

Sounds superb and will make a great car very quickly in Pete's capable hands.

I am slightly amused by Petes comment about Liverpool. Try parking that car in bestwood for a day and see what the fire brigade leave for you after they've put it out! ;D

54k. Is that original then Pete? If so, you have a cracking motor there. I presume you had it running, albeit momentarily? If so 10/10 for buying it mate.

It started fine and ran on 6 cylinders but, you wouldnt run it for to long.

Seeing an original cash receipt for 26K for an Omega and 15K for an Astra was a first for me!

Yep, that is good news.

Cash receipt for £26k is a biggie. I bet that took a few minutes counting all those fivers! ;D

Bagsie the boot liner?

Bagsie the whole damned car now!

Looks like the marker thingie for tensioning has come adrift. Are the bearings going the same way?

Correct.
But what else is missing and what could all the metal swarf on the water pump be?

Clue: Its a '98 engine and the cambelt cover has not been removed before.

I'm going to guess tensioner bearings that have disintigrated also parts of the belt maybe.

Matchelss fitted a good second hand set of idlers and an adjuster that I had tonight to see if the engine was a runner (new ones will be fitted shortly).

It ran perfectly so thats good news.........the old tensioner was totaly seized!

Right, now that I know that there are no bent valves its time for :
cambelt kit
water pump
new aux belt
several oil changes (its running on a mixture of Brent light crude and coal dust)
replace camcover seals (yes they are leaking afterall)
flush coolant

just need to get No1 daughter installed at Uni, finish the patio, refit Allenm's heads etc before I dare be seen with my head under the bonnet again. So thats a cambelt change in the snow then. :(

Incidentally, the blob in the photos was the melted remains of the tensioner plastic spacer with the pointer embedded in it.
